Nokia might still be fighting for a place in the smartphone business as it stands today, but the Finnish company isn’t a new name in the mobile phone industry by any means. It is one that has passed the test of time and still lives on.

Back in the day, what made Nokia such a formidable mobile phone brand was the classic industrial design language that made its devices stand out. This is why devices like the Nokia 6100 series and Nokia 3310 were such a massive hit back then.

Today, Nokia employs just about the same strategy that has culminated into some great budget phones. Even better is that the current Android-powered Nokia phones have the blessing of Google’s Android One that promises timely software updates for a longer period.

Sure, owners of the Nokia 8 might not be a happy lot now that the device will be missing out on Android 10. However, there’s a reprieve in the extended software support window that will see the device continue receiving security updates for another year ending October 2020.

Nokia 8 (2017) will now receive quarterly security updates

Once we reach 2 years from the time last market launched these smartphones (and following Operator and regional approvals), the Nokia 8, Nokia 6**, Nokia 5 and the Nokia 3 will be able to receive quarterly security patch updates right through to the end of the 3rd year. To ensure you’ll be up to date, these quarterly releases will include all patches from the previous months.

As of this writing, the Nokia 5.1 Plus and Nokia 2.2 are now receiving the latest Android security patch for the month of August 2019. The update is based on Android Pie and installs software version V2.20A.

The update not only bumps the security patch level to the latest version available, but it also improves system stability and the user interface. The story is quite different with the incoming Nokia 2.2 software update, which weighs 74.5MB.

The changelog only mentions the updated August security patch, but you can also expect bug fixes and performance improvements as part of this update as well. It’s available over the air, so be sure to be patient as you wait for the download notification.

The Nokia 5.1 Plus and Nokia 2.2 now join the likes of Nokia 8, Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 6, 5, 4.2, & 3.2, Nokia 2, Nokia 6.1 Plus & Nokia 9 PureView, Nokia 7.1, Nokia 7 Plus, & Nokia 8.1, and Nokia 6.1 in receiving August security patches.

Latest My phone app update adds support for new phone release

Also receiving a new update is the My phone app companion meant for all Nokia phones. With this app, owners of Nokia phones can get involved with the Nokia phones community, discover app recommendations, contact support, get answers to frequently asked questions, and so on.

In the latest update to version 2.4.5, the company has now included support for new phone release. HMD Global is expected to unveil new Nokia phones this coming week at the IFA 2019, hence the new update.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
