Over the two or so years that HMD Global has been selling Android-powered Nokia phones, the company has failed to impress in the flagship smartphone segment. First was the Nokia 8 that underwhelmed with its old-school design and a year-old flagship processor back in 2017.

Instead of waiting for a full year cycle before announcing a successor to the Nokia 8, HMD was at it again, this time announcing the Nokia 8 Sirocco at the MWC 2018 powered by the same processor used in the standard Nokia 8.

The only major difference between the two is the design, where the Nokia 8 Sirocco adopted a modern-day look by 2018 standards. But that wasn’t the only thing to set these two apart. Also, the newer Sirocco came with the next iteration of Android OS based on Android One out of the box.

With the blessing of Android One, it meant that the Nokia 8 Sirocco had an upper hand, although the Nokia 8 and other first-generation Android Nokia phones have since been admitted into the Android One program whatsoever.

The Sirocco, for instance, is guaranteed an extra year of software support compared to the standard Nokia 8. Also, the fact that the Sirocco has Oreo preinstalled means it’ll be upgraded to Android Q Android 10 as the second major Android OS upgrade. HMD has already confirmed this, BTW.

As you wait for the update to Android 10, which will arrive in Q1 2020 BTW, there’s a new software update available to download right now. The update is here to bump the security patch level of the Nokia 8 Sirocco to the latest version available – August 2019.

The update weighs in at 107.2MB, carries software version V4.14F and is available over the air. So far, the rollout has begun in Switzerland (Europe) and we expect more regions to join the party in the coming days.

Besides the updated security patch level, the V4.14F update also improves the general system stability of the device and improves the user interface. However, one user had to go through a scary moment when the phone froze after the reboot but holding the power button to reboot again fixed it.

My phone froze after the reboot when finishing the upgrade. Had to hold the power key to reboot once more. Now it’s fine, can’t see anything different as of now. Hope it solves some problems other members have.

Again, this is an OTA update and usually, such updates take several days to reach all units. So, if you own the Nokia 8 Sirocco, you may have to wait until early next week, if not the over the weekend, to switch to the latest August security patch.

Other Nokia devices that have recently received the August security update include Nokia 6, Nokia 5, Nokia 4.2 & Nokia 3.2, Nokia 8, Nokia 2, Nokia 6.1 Plus & Nokia 9, Nokia 7.1, Nokia 7 Plus & Nokia 8.1, and Nokia 6.1.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
