Another day, another bunch of Huawei/Honor phones getting EMUI 9.1 update!

Asian OEMs like Xiaomi and Huawei prefer to make heavy investments on the software side as part of their smartphone business. One of the main reasons behind this stance is to attract regular people with the iOS-esque skins as well as generate revenue from the stock apps.

On the other hand, there are Android enthusiasts who love the vanilla version of Android. Not only it is much cleaner and free from excessive bloats, the user interface is consistent and properly streamlined.

I would love to buy a Huawei (or Honor) phone running Android One firmware – a similar step taken by Xiaomi with their Mi A lineup. Collaboration with Android One will also ensure regular software updates, but Huawei is really nailing the competition in this context.

Thanks to their in-house HiSilicon Kirin SoC, which is widely used in both Huawei and Honor branded devices, releasing major version of Android updates and complex underlying changes (such as Project Treble) to legacy devices becomes relatively easy for the Chinese telecom giant.

After releasing stable EMUI 9.1 for eight phones a few days ago, the company is now rolling out the same update to five more devices. These are:

  • Huawei nova 4
  • Huawei nova 3i
  • Huawei Maimang 7
  • Huawei Enjoy 9 Plus
  • Honor 8X

The sole Honor branded device in the above list is Honor 8X, which is confirmed to get Android Q in future. However, the Android Pie update for the phone was reportedly on hold due to ‘further improvements’.

Well, looks like Huawei engineers have done with the tweaking thus the long-anticipated update is finally on the move, and some regions like Turkey are already getting it.

In fact, we heard the same story in case of Huawei nova 3i a couple of days ago. Good to see that EMUI 9.1 is now coming to both of them.

The other phones in this batch are Huawei nova 4, Huawei Enjoy 9 Plus and Huawei Maimang 7, i.e the China exclusive version of Huawei Mate 20 Lite. According to the OEM, these phones should get the update July 25 onward.

Usual goodies like the performance oriented EROFS and GPU Turbo 3.0 are present in the EMUI 9.1 builds for these phones. Users can force the update by executing the Service app from their phone.

The status of EMUI update rollout details can be found in this article. Do let us know if you get the update prompt on your Huawei/Honor phone.

Update 2 (August 02)

Both Huawei Nova 3 & 3i are getting the EMUI 9.1 updates. Details here.
