NOTE: For all latest, breaking news related to Tumblr adult content ban as well as its alternatives, head here.

After Tumblr announced a sort of blanket ban on all things NSFW/adult/explicit, not only a lot of existing services began welcoming Tumblr refugees with open arms, but several new Tumblr alternatives also started popping up.

We have been updating our exhaustive list of Tumblr alternatives ever since the ban announcement, and now, another new name has been added: iLOOPit.

So what’s iLOOPit? It’s basically a GIF-focused service that offers a gif making tool, gif hosting, as well as a site for browsing gifs. The service’s target audience includes gif makers, casual gif surfers, as well as gif and video collectors.

iLOOPit describes video collectors as those who “use iloopit as pin board for videos they enjoyed. They record GIF with browser extension get it saved at iloopit to get a memo and access videos from any device.”

The service is being developed as we speak. That, however, doesn’t mean you can’t use it currently. Following are the features that have been implemented:

  • Online gif maker – tool to cut off a gif from video
  • Gif uploader
  • Filters GIFS by tags and users
  • Simple design and navigation via infinite scrolling
  • Inline GIFS playback
  • Full screen GIFS playback (we call it Looplayer)
  • GIFs in format of lightweight looping html5 videos

And here’s a list of functionalities that are to be developed:

  • Personal gif blog site on a custom subdomain e.g. username.iloopit.net
  • Custom color schemes and templates for a site
  • “gifsets”: gifs created from common source video will be grouped into playlist
  • Browser extension to record GIFs right from a video page
  • “gifs I liked”: users will get gifs they liked saved at their profile page. this will not only let them easily revisit favorite gifs but also be useful to community by sharing their collection

Now, what about iLoopit policy when it comes to pornographic content? Well, here’s what a small disclaimer at the bottom of their website says:

iloopit.net has a zero-tolerance policy against illegal pornography. This site is rated with RTA label. Parents, you can easily block access to this site

And here’s a relevant excerpt from their terms of services page:

You can find more info about the service by heading to their website.

Among other Tumblr alternatives, recently, CEO of Explicitr exclusively shared with us more information about the platform, revealing thousands of new users have signed up after the Tumblr ban. You can read their complete interview here.

Then there’s also Pillowfort, a platform which has received a lot of media coverage as a Tumblr alternative. The company specifically revealed they got over 10,000 new users in a couple of weeks after Tumblr made the announcement.

Pillowfort is also one of the very few platforms who are pitching themselves as Tumblr alternative, and have also shared in detail their stance on sexually explicit art featuring minors.

Meanwhile Tumblr is going through a very difficult phase. The way the company is going about flagging content on its platform is negatively affecting a lot of innocent people.

From posts being wrongly flagged to Tumblr’s own examples of allowed adult content getting flagged, there are multiple examples that illustrate what’s wrong with Tumblr’s implementation of the ban.

Users have also been alleging that negative reviews are being deleted or manipulated on Google Play Store and Apple App Store, and the button to appeal wrongly flagged content has also been removed.

A section of users have also been protesting this censorship effort by the company. A 24 hour log off protest was organized on December 17, and the second phase – which involves mass tweeting Tumblr, Verizon, Oath, and Tumblr CEO, as well as leaving negative reviews about the app on Google and Apple app stores – is set for next week.

PiunikaWeb is a unique initiative that mainly focuses on investigative journalism. This means we do a lot of hard work to come up with news stories that are either ‘exclusive,’ ‘breaking,’ or ‘curated’ in nature. Perhaps that’s the reason our work has been picked by the likes of Forbes, Foxnews, Gizmodo, TechCrunch, Engadget, The Verge, Macrumors, and more. Do take a tour of our website to get a feel of our work.
