Here’s the crux of the article in video form:
Original story (published on May 19, 2021) follows:
At Google I/O 2021, the search-engine tech giant officially introduced Android 12 to the world, albeit one of the very first publicly available builds.
This effectively marked the beginning of more active development from all major Android OEMs with the release of the Android 12 Developer Preview 1.
Among the devices listed to take part in this program are two OnePlus devices, the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro.
And with the rollout of Android 12 Developer Preview 1, it is a race of finding and fixing bugs that should culminate in the release of stable Android 12-based OxygenOS 12 sometimes in fall (if last year is anything to go by).
As has been customary, we’re going to keep an eye out for these bugs and issues and follow them to their conclusion (read workarounds and bug-fix updates).
Usually, we hold off from pointing out bugs and issues with various builds until the update gets to the public beta phases but OnePlus might have dropped the ball already.
A section of users is noting issues being unable to set up their OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro devices following this update to OxygenOS 12 Developer Preview 1.
According to them, the setup process gets stuck, leaving them with soft-bricked devices. A suggested fix involves reflashing OxygenOS 11, unlocking the bootloader, and toggling OEM unlock. This disables Factory Reset Protection (FRP).
OnePlus has since moved quickly to pull the download links from its community forum and you can read more on this in our coverage of the same here.
We shall continue to keep an eye on these OxygenOS 12 issues and report new ones as and when they become apparent, along with an analysis of their current status.
For a look at some of the bugs and issues afflicting users of various OnePlus devices currently running Android 11-based OxygenOS 11 and their current status, check out our dedicated tracker of the same.

Update 4 (December 08)
IST 05:46 pm: The stable OxygenOS 12 update is out for the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro but many users seem to have taken an instant dislike to the ColorOS 12 skin that has overtaken the previous minimal OxygenOS UI fans loved.
Apart from that, the update even brings a boatload of bugs and issues that left some users wondering if the company mistakenly rolled out a beta build rather than the stable version, as highlighted by a report.
The new skin does not allow users to change icons individually, customize the status bar, or even disable the Google Discover feed. Further, the Phone app can only be accessed via the homescreen or the Play Store.
Another bug that was noticed is that you can no longer kill all the running apps by tapping the ‘Close all’ button on the recent screen as the current app remains active.
Update 5 (December 09)
IST 06:30 pm: It looks like after updating their devices to OxygenOS 12, the About Phone section one OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro is showing incorrect CPU information. The phone shows that it is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 instead of Snapdragon 888.
Update 6 (December 10)
IST 06:00 pm: It seems that factory resetting your OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro after installing the latest OxygenOS 12 update may get rid of some of the performance issues and bugs as highlighted by a report.
It’s possible that the new ColorOS base conflicts with some remnants of OxygenOS 11 which caused the various issues. So we’d suggest giving it a shot to see if it offers an improved experience. But this does not excuse the company for rolling out half-baked software.
