Oppo has plenty of phones waiting to be upgraded to Android 9 Pie. Yes, you read that right! If you own an Oppo phone, including the flagship Find X and Reno series, I bet next year might be the right time to begin thinking about Android 10 coming your way.

Heck, even the Realme that I have been in awe of has just recently confirmed that the first devices to get Android 10 will do so in Q1 2020, including the Realme 3 Pro that made it to the initial Android Q beta program. To say that’s disappointing would be an understatement.

It’s only a few weeks ago that several Oppo phones started testing ColorOS 6 based on Android 9 Pie beta. Oppo F7, Oppo F7 Youth, the aforementined Find X, Oppo A7x, and Oppo R15 are all trialing Pie ahead of the stable rollout.

Oppo has also pushed the August security patches to the likes of Oppo F5, F5 Youth, and F5 Pro, Oppo F9 Pro, and even the Find X. And as of this writing, a new Oppo A9 update is rolling out with the most recent security patch available.

According to the tweep who got the Oppo A9 update, the new firmware also lets you uninstall the TouchPal keyboard app. If you are a seasoned Oppo user, you’ll know that all Oppo phones come with TouchPal as the default keyboard.

Prior to the incoming Oppo A9 update, it wasn’t possible to delete this app from your phone. But once you install the September patch on your A9, it will be possible to get rid of it and pick another great keyboard of your choice (hint: Google Keyboard [GBoard]).

While some people probably enjoyed having TouchPal on their Oppo phones, getting rid of it is just one way of reducing the bloatware in the heavy ColorOS skin and for me, it’s welcome.

And oh, if you are wondering what Oppo had to say about Android 10 update for the Oppo A9 as someone enquired in the tweet above? Well…

Hi, we’re glad that you have received the update. We’ll share the information whenever the update of Android 10 is available for OPPO A9 on our social media channels. Kindly stay tuned.

BTW, that’s the typical response you get from support when they have no clue about if a device will receive a software update. So, at this point, it’s safe to expect the worst for your Oppo A9. But not so fast.

Since the A9 runs Android Pie out of the box, it should get at least one major OS upgrade regardless of how terrible Oppo is with software updates. And that’s Android 10.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
