Asus’ implementation of Android Pie on ZenFone Max Pro series turned out to be quite a mushy Android dessert that seemingly didn’t leave a good taste in the users’ mouth. The update instigated problems like screen flickering, screen blackout on unlocking, missing PUBG HD graphics and others.

What’s appeasing is that the Taiwanese OEM acted quickly to resolve some of the bugs. However, the company probably didn’t cure a Pie-specific problem (that was reported and fixed on ZenFone Max Pro M1 units) from root, for it made way to the older ZenFone 5 units too after installing Pie.

We’re talking about PUBG HD graphics gone missing after Pie. As we mentioned in our last coverage on the matter, missing PUBG HD graphics issue despite being claimed by the company to have been fixed with an update (bearing build number 16.0615.1905.100) continued to persist on ZenFone 5.

For a quick refresher, ZenFone 5 (ZE620KL) is part of ASUS’ 2018 ZenFone 5 series. It’s a mid-range device fueled by Snapdragon 636 processor, and shipped with the then-available Android 8.0 Oreo layered with ZenUI 5.

As for the PUBG graphics issue, users basically reported whenever they try to enable HD graphics in the game, they encounter an error stating “The option will be available on your device soon” (as can be seen in the image below).

In fact, instead of fixing PUBG HD graphics glitch, the same update also triggered a new issue of distorted audio while using Poweramp music player app. Both problems were at least acknowledged by a ZenTalk forums moderator, and here’s what they said regarding the PUBG issue:

For the problem of “HD” or “FHD” on PUBG, this problem is under investigation.

And regarding the Poweramp audio glitch:

This problem is under processing in a proactive way.

Now the company has come up with a new ZenFone 5 update bumping the version further to 16.0615.1905.102. The changelog notifies to have fixed both PUBG HD graphics bug as well as the headphones audio problem. Here’s what the update release notes read:

【Release Note】
Fix no HD Graphic option in PUBG
Optimize system stability
Fix headphone audio issue

Here’s hoping this time the issues have actually been resolved by the company. As is usually the case with staged rollouts, the FOTA update may take time to reach out to all ZenFone 5 devices. Meanwhile, we are looking for confirmation from users if this patch has actually resolved the problems or not.
