Firefox now has gradient themes and new widgets in Nightly

Firefox is starting to look a lot more colorful. If you run Firefox Nightly, the testing build where Mozilla tries things out before they hit everyone, you can now dress up the browser with a fresh set of gradient themes. I poked around in mine, and there’s a whole grid of them waiting in the add-ons section.

Head into the Themes page, and you’ll find a dozen options to pick from. They’ve got simple names like Sun, Flame, Flare, Lavender, Dusk, Lagoon, Pine, Tide, Ash, and Smoke, and each one softly washes the top of the browser in its own color. Sun leans warm and orange, Lavender goes soft purple, Tide is a cool teal, and so on.

There’s also a Light, Dark, and Device toggle up top, so the themes shift to match whether you want a bright window or a darker one. If none of them grab you, the plain Default is still there.

These themes are tied to Nova, the bigger redesign Mozilla has been slowly building toward. Nova rounds off the corners and gives the whole interface a softer feel. It’s still very much a work in progress, and earlier on it was rough enough that we said you could try it but probably shouldn’t. It’s come a long way since then, and the gradient themes are one of the more finished-looking pieces.

The other thing you’ll notice is the New Tab page, which is turning into a little dashboard. Alongside the themes, Nightly is showing off new widgets like a world clock with a handful of cities and time zones, a daily crossword, and a wallpaper picker. If that sounds like a lot going on, it is, and not everyone wants it.

That said, Firefox has been busy in other areas too. This week alone, Mozilla shipped Firefox 153 with native Containers and a lot more on desktops. Meanwhile, the Firefox app on Android has added support for Tab Groups, while the iPhone app now includes the new voice-powered Quick Answers feature.

For now, the themes and widgets are Nightly-only, so treat them as a preview. But if you like installing early and playing with new looks, this is a fun one to grab.
