Original story (published on July 14, 2020) follows:

Recently, we saw Google release Android 11 Beta 2. This build of the upcoming version of Android laid a lot of emphasis on stability and little in terms of features. With that, it is safe to say that Android 11 is almost done.

Now the question is, which devices are going to get updated to Android 11? Is your device going to get updated by your OEM to Android 11?

Simple! Since most Android OEMs commit themselves to at least two new versions of Android, most devices that came with Android 9 Pie out-of-the-box should get updated to Android 11, right? Well, not exactly.

Back in mid June, we got reports that the Redmi Note 8 Pro, a solid mid-range device launched in 2019 with Android 9 Pie out-of-the-box, would not get updated to Android 11 after all. If the Note 8 Pro will not get updated to Android 11, what about the Redmi Note 8?

When asked by a user whether the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 would get updated to Android 11, the moderator states that there’s still no official information on the same.

As mentioned, the Redmi Note 8 was unveiled back in 2019 and it came with Android 9.0 layered with MIUI 11. Currently, the device runs Android 10-based MIUI 11 as it awaits an update to MIUI 12. It would be rather odd for Xiaomi to deny the Redmi Note 8 devices an update to Android 11 and settle for a single major version of Android.

The same predicament faces yet another Xiaomi device, the Redmi 8A. Also launched back in September 2019 with Android 9 Pie-based MIUI 11, the device is not likely to get updated to Android 11, at least according to a Mi Community moderator.

Xiaomi users know that MIUI updates are far more feature-rich than new versions of Android so maybe, Xiaomi Redmi 8A and Redmi Note 8 users might want to start asking about their device’s eligibility for the next version of MIUI.

That said, we shall continue to keep an eye out for Xiaomi’s official communication on this issue and update as and when we get more information.
