Original story (published on January 12, 2021) follows:

Xiaomi recently released the first MIUI 12.5 build for the Redmi Note 8 that also tagged along the latest and greatest from Google — Android 11 OS.

This is the second major Android OS update for the Redmi Note 8 following its launch in August 2019 with Android Pie pre-installed. The device has since been upgraded to MIUI 12 based on Android 10.

With the switch to Android 11 for Redmi Note 8 users, a similar move was always on the cards with respect to the Redmi Note 8 Pro. In fact, we already came across reports regarding delayed rollout.

As it turns out, this was indeed the case. As of this writing, a new MIUI 12.5 build is now available for the Redmi Note 8 Pro in China.

Not only do Note 8 Pro users participating in the beta program get their hands on new MIUI 12.5 features, but there is also plenty to write home about with respect to Android 11 features.

The update to Android 11 for Redmi Note 8 Pro users is arriving as a nightly build, meaning not even those in the public beta program will not be receiving this version over the air.

Instead, this edition is limited to in-house testing before making its way to the public beta channel. You can read more about the various MIUI development stages here.

The firmware version in question is MIUI 12.5 beta 21.1.11, which was released just yesterday. Of course, we also have the download link for those who’d like to try the new firmware manually.

  • Codename: begonia
  • Channel: China Closed Beta

The Redmi Note 8 Pro joins a host of other Xiaomi devices currently testing MIUI 12.5 beta, although not all participating devices have been upgraded to Android 11.

For instance, the Redmi Note 7/7S and Note 7 Pro are already on MIUI 12.5, but still based on Android 10. That said, the fact that your device is eligible for MIUI 12.5 does not automatically qualify to receive Android 11.

We will be keeping an eye on the developments around MIUI 12.5 and Android 11 for eligible devices and bring you the latest as and when it happens.

Update 1 (January 13)

According to reports just coming in, it seems as though Xiaomi immediately pulled back the MIUI 12.5 beta update released for the Redmi Note 8 Pro after incidences of bootlooping emerged.

As we are investigating issues that may affect stability, Redmi Note 8 Pro is temporarily suspended today. Thank you for your understanding. (Bootlooping)

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
