New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on January 06, 2021) follows:

MIUI 13 is the biggest upgrade that many Xiaomi smartphone users are looking forward to this year. But before then, there is what can be considered as a stop-gap update dubbed MIUI 12.5.

Unveiled late last month, Xiaomi says the major purpose of MIUI 12.5 update is to offer stability and optimizations ahead of the MIUI 13 rollout.

Of course, there is more to the said MIUI 12.5 update than the eye meets. For starters, it has been reported that this update will also bring Android 11 to eligible Xiaomi devices.

Essentially, what this means is that Android 10 devices that are in line for a MIUI 12.5 update will also be upgraded to Android 11. This is where the curious case of the Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro comes in.

It is known that Xiaomi provides one major OS update to its Redmi devices. But after lengthy cries from the massive fanbase, more so those in the Redmi Note 8 series, it appears that Xiaomi has had a change of heart.

Sure, there is nowhere that Xiaomi has published an official statement on this, but if you see smoke, there is always some form of fire accompanying it.

Matter of fact, we are getting reports from China suggesting that Xiaomi is delaying the release of MIUI 12.5 beta update for Redmi Note 8, Note 8 Pro and Note 9 4G and Note 9 Pro 5G on purpose.

As per the reports, the reason for this delay is so that the devices can be upgraded to a newer version of Android. Since all four devices are on Android 10, the said OS upgrade can only bring Android 11.

Due to the major version upgrade of Android, Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G, Redmi Note8 Pro, Redmi Note 8, Redmi Note9 4G will start to release MIUI12.5 in mid-to-late January 2021, thank you for your understanding.

Considering earlier reports that MIUI 12.5 update will be accompanied by Android 11 on eligible devices, this latest development only serves to add more weight to previous reports.

For those still in the dark, you’ll even be glad to know that there is an alleged schedule for the release of MIUI 12.5 update based on Android 11 for the Redmi Note 8 and Note 8T.

But of course, until we see the actual MIUI 12.5 builds based on Android 11, all this should be taken with a pinch of salt. Of course, we will keep a close eye on the matter and bring you the latest news.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
