Here’s a crux of the article in a short video:

Here’s the complete story:

Amidst the rising speculations about the arrival of Android 10, Xiaomi released a faulty build of Android Pie based October patch for Mi A2. They didn’t elaborate much, and pushed a revised update during the first week of November.

As a result, the subsequent November update came as two separate incremental OTAs.

At the beginning of this year, many Mi A2 users faced bootloop after installing the January patch. Cherry on top, the long standing eMMC issues regarding this phone are still unresolved.

Be it the faulty hardware components or the disgraceful quality control from Xiaomi, Mi A2 was able to cement its name in the hall of shame. Let’s assume that the official support persons actually know what they are saying, then the phone should receive stable Android 10 update in January 2020.

Where is my salt shaker?

Both Mi A1 and Mi A2 Lite grabbed the Pie based December security update during the last week, but Mi A2 failed to enter in that club. Well, a new update is indeed rolling out for the second generation Android One phone from Xiaomi, but there is a catch!

The size of the incremental zip is slightly bigger than 100 MB, and it bumps the internal software version number of Mi A2 to V10.0.18.0. Apparently there is no new improvement except a new modem as well December patch, but Xiaomi engineers did commit a serious blunder.

According to user reports, the download module of Google Chrome is not working. Browsers like Firefox are working fine, as they are not using the stock Download Manager.

Fortunately a Russian user from 4PDA has discovered the root cause of this bug. Xiaomi seemingly forgot to include the ‘local_filename’ column in the database used by Download Manager. The DPM Framework is also broken due to the inclusion of a wrong shared object.

It could be possible that Xiaomi will reissue the update in the near future due to these showstopper bugs. The unavailability of the full OTA package might be an indicator towards the speculation. If you are still interested to install the build, here you go:

  • Device: Mi A2
  • Codename: jasmine
  • Channel: Global Stable
