Google released the stable version of Android 9 Pie in August 2018. The party grew bigger as the year progressed, with the addition of HMD Global, OnePlus, Sony, Huawei, and even Samsung making the cut at around Christmas time.

LG managed to squeeze in the Android One-based LG G7 One somewhere in November 2018, but the flagship LG G7 ThinQ had to wait until January to get a taste of the stable Pie dessert. Besides the long wait, this update was also limited to the Korean market, something that was a bit frustrating.

The G7 ThinQ Pie update went global in June 2019, with Europe leading the way ahead of the U.S. Not long after, though, Verizon, Metro PCS, and U.S. Cellular joined the Pie party just ahead of T-Mobile.

Since OTA updates usually take time and sometimes roll out based on regions, it was always going to take some wait for all LG G7 ThinQ units to receive the update to Pie. This wait can be frustrating, but it ends at some point. Always.

For users of the LG G7 ThinQ on Google Fi and the U.S. unlocked model, this wait is finally over. The update to Android Pie is now available for download on these two variants. They have the same model number LMG710ULM, which explains why the updates are arriving at the same time.

The difference between the Google Fi and U.S. unlocked variants of the G7 ThinQ is the Region Suffix, where the former has “GFI” and the latter has “USA”. That said, make sure you pick the right firmware just in case you want to install the OS manually.

In addition to installing Android 9 Pie, the software, which is arriving as version G710ULM21d, also bumps up the security patch level from March to June 2019. Yea, it’s not the latest version available, but most probably won’t be bothered now that they have Pie to play with.

It’s strange to see a device associated with Google receiving software updates this late. But no, Google does not control how frequent and timely software updates are pushed to devices that have been added to the Google Fi program, not just the LG G7 ThinQ. Or maybe it should?

Another thing worth noting that at the moment, the LG G7 ThinQ Android Pie update is only available for installation through the LG Bridge. You can grab the download here and install it on your Windows or Mac PC, if you don’t have it already.

It may take a few days before the Pie update starts showing up on eligible LG G7 units as an OTA. But since the firmware is already available for download, it shouldn’t be long before you receive a download notification to install Pie on your Google Fi or U.S. unlocked variant.

At a time when LG is struggling to push a year-old Android OS update to its 2018 flagship phone, Google is getting ready to update the entire generation of Pixel smartphones to Android Q, probably before the end of August. It makes me wonder when the LG G7 ThinQ will receive Q.

Update 1 (August 22)

The unlocked variants of LG G7 ThinQ in the Australian region are also receiving the Pie update, along with the latest August security patch through LG Bridge.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
