Original story (published on July 29, 2019) follows:

MediaTek made their fortune by producing tons of budget friendly ARM based SoCs, which were occasionally found in generic ‘no-name’ Chinese phones.

With time, some major Android OEMs started to use MediaTek chipsets on their phones, but the overall feedback was kind of polarized.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4/4X: The MediaTek variant (codename: nikel) was vastly inferior than the Snapdragon model (codename: mido) in terms of performance and software updates

On paper, the chips are fairly good performer. But MediaTek is gradually falling behind Qualcomm in the fabrication master race which directly affects the efficiency and thermal throttling of the SoCs produced by the former.

The frequency of Android version updates is yet another Achilles heel of MediaTek based phones. However, the scenario is much more better now than last few years. For example, Realme 1 – originally launched with Android Oreo – got Pie update and updated security patch.

Announced in March 2019, Realme 3 is another phone from the Chinese OEM featuring a MediaTek SoC – Helio P70 this time. The phone was launched with Android Pie based ColorOS 6 on board, and got a 13+2 MP dual rear camera setup.

The update frequency is quite good for the phone so far. The first major OTA for Realme 3 brought May security patch, Theme Store, Lock screen Magazine and a truckload of new software features.

Subsequently the phone received June patch, along with some call reception related fixes at the beginning of July. Now that we are on the verge of moving to August, Realme is reportedly pushing a new software update to the phone.

The internal version number has been bumped to RMX1825EX_11_A.19 from RMX1825EX_11_A.18. Don’t let the minor increment confuse you, as Realme bundled July security patches with a handful of fixes in this new build.

With this OTA (which is available to a small number of users at this moment), Realme 3 becomes part of the roster featuring Realme 3 Pro, Realme 2 Pro and Realme 1 – all running most up-to-date security patches.
