[Released in India & globally] Redmi S2/Redmi Y2 Android Pie 9.0 update rolling out once again, brings June security patch

Xiaomi’s endeavour with Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 helped the community to come up with countless memes; even the company itself is aware of the same.

Besides Mi A1 and Mi A2 Lite, several Redmi branded phones were blessed by the SD625 platform – including the selfie centric Redmi S2 (sold as Redmi Y2 in India).

However, the software update history of Redmi Y2/S2 is full of controversies. Although the phone was launched with Android 8.1 Oreo, it was dropped from the internal Pie beta testing without any apparent reason.

Amidst the confusions and uncertainties, Xiaomi ensured the arrival of stable Pie update in due time. As a matter of fact, they ‘accidentally’ rolled out MIUI 10.3.2.0 back in the first week of June which brought the long-anticipated Android Pie to Chinese Redmi S2 units.

Well, that was really accidental! Xiaomi quickly pulled back the particular build and distributed another Oreo based 10.3.4.0 OTA in China. On the other hand, global/Indian Redmi Y2 users are still stuck with age old MIUI 10.3.1.0  without any access to new software features.

The Chinese OEM did publish the Pie based kernel source code for Redmi Y2/S2 (codename: ysl), and now it seems that they are finally pushing the stable Pie update in the form of V10.3.3.0.PEFCNXM.

Apart from June security patches, this new build also bundles floating windows for incoming calls during gaming. The complete changelog is as follows:

– Optimization: Updated Android Security Patch to June 2019. Increased system security.

Contacts

– Fix: Contacts couldn’t be deleted from SIM cards in some cases

Settings

– Optimization: The Apps section of the Settings got a structural revamp

– Fix: Icons weren’t displayed correctly after adjusting fonts

File Manager

– Fix: Sometimes it took too long for the thumbnails to refresh

Game speed booster

– New: Floating windows for incoming calls during games

Mi Cloud

– Optimization: Improved sync across multiple devices

Indian Redmi Y2 users need to hold their breath, as cross-flashing the Chinese build can be problematic in some occasions.
