Google’s re-entry into the tablet market with the Google Pixel Tablet in June 2023 garnered attention, albeit with mixed reviews. Despite a promising form factor and commendable performance, the overall package fell short of expectations for the people at Android Police, who felt the tablet’s best ideas are half-baked. The folks at The Verge thought Google got the basics right with the Pixel Tablet while over at CNET, Scott Stein termed it as “a great start for Google’s return to tablets,” which is basically encouraging Google to release a successor to the Pixel Tablet.

Leaked codenames

While official details are scarce, speculations about the Pixel Tablet 2 have begun circulating. Insights gleaned from Android 14 QPR3 Beta 1 revealed a couple of hardware codenames — Clementine and Kiyomi — associated with unreleased Google devices. Notably, the first-generation Pixel Tablet was internally dubbed Tangorpro, drawing parallels to hybrid citrus fruits like tangors, which are a cross between tangerines and oranges. The fact that both Clementine and Kiyomi are citrus hybrids too hints at a thematic link to a potential Pixel Tablet 2.

The thematic coherence of these codenames, alluding to hybrid citrus fruits akin to the tablet’s dual functionality as both a tablet and smart display, sparks curiosity about the potential features of the upcoming devices. However, beyond the codenames and their thematic associations, little else is known about the Pixel Tablet 2 specifications, features or even the design. The fact that the Pixel Fold 2 could get a new design adds to the uncertainty surrounding the Pixel Tablet 2 design, but that’s a different story you can find in this article.

Google Pixel Tablet 2 release date

The current Pixel Tablet was first teased in May 2022 and unveiled a year later, but it was until June 2023 that sales began. With this in mind, we can speculate that the Pixel Tablet 2 may be released in mid-to-late 2024. Google has yet to officially confirm the development of the second-generation tablet, so this timeline relies on historical patterns and conjecture.

However, with rumors only just surfacing in early 2024, a summer 2024 release may be optimistic. Potential insights into the Pixel Tablet 2 could emerge during Google’s annual I/O conference, typically held in May, but again, this is just an educated guess.

Google Pixel Tablet 2 price

The Pixel Tablet arrived priced at $499 for 128GB and $599 for 256GB of storage, which is likely to be the price for the Pixel Tablet 2. However, with prices of gadgets ever on the rise, I wouldn’t be surprised if Google hikes the price of the Pixel Tablet 2. But I hope not.

Will the Pixel Tablet 2 rise above its predecessor? Only time will tell. But looking at the reviews of the original tablet, it’s evident that many of those who got their hands on it are waiting for Google’s next move with eager anticipation.
