Brave has released version 1.98 of its browser, which is currently rolling out to users. One major change the company announced is adding three new AI models to its Leo assistant. Users updating their browser on a computer can now pick between GPT 5.6 Luna, GPT 5.6 Terra, and Grok 4.6 right from the model selection menu.
In a post on X, the company explained that it hosts all of these built-in models on its own secure servers to keep user data private. According to Brave, “Conversations aren’t stored or logged after a response is generated. No personal data is retained. Your conversations aren’t used for training.”
This approach to privacy is why Brave consistently comes out on top in privacy tests. Though it lost a point in the usability round for bundling AI and crypto tools in the first place, as Proton noted in its recent video.
If you check the Replies under Brave’s announcement, plenty of users are already complaining about the paywall and asking why older models are being added now. When I checked the model picker myself, I noticed that GPT 5.6 Luna is actually listed for free, which is pretty good. It is a great model for most everyday tasks, so I believe Brave made the right choice by giving it away at no cost.
On the flip side, both GPT 5.6 Terra and Grok 4.6 are locked behind the paid Leo Premium plan. Plus, Grok 4.6 isn’t even the latest model from SpaceXSI; it’s Grok 4.7.
But while it is true that Grok 4.7 is newer, I have been testing it outside of Brave and noticed that it burns through usage limits and tokens way too fast. It also isn’t a massive step up from Grok 4.6 in daily use, so you aren’t really missing out on much here.
Meanwhile, mobile users are still frustrated about hitting a credit card wall on their phones, which adds to the headache as Brave works to fix ongoing Apple integration issues on iPhones and Macs.
That being said, Brave has yet to publish a detailed changelog for the latest update. So we’ll keep an eye out and share any additional details about the update in a follow-up post.
