Mozilla is rolling out Firefox 153.0.1, the browser’s first bug-fix update since Firefox 153 landed last week with major additions like Native Containers, Windows HDR support, and new PDF editing tools.
Unlike its feature-packed predecessor, this release focuses entirely on stability. If you’ve already updated to version 153, this is one release you’ll probably want to install as soon as it becomes available.
The biggest fix addresses a Windows startup crash that affected some users after updating Firefox. In certain cases, Firefox couldn’t load some of its internal files, preventing the browser from launching properly. Mozilla says Firefox should now start even if that issue occurs, though parts of the interface may not appear correctly until another update completes.
Mozilla also fixed a frustrating audio bug that caused playback to become silent on some music and streaming websites after pausing and resuming media. If you’ve run into that issue, this update should take care of it.
Another welcome fix targets the New Tab page. Users who applied custom wallpapers could see the background flash a few seconds after the page loaded. It’s a small annoyance, but one that stood out enough for Mozilla to squash quickly. Firefox 153.0.1 also patches two separate browser crashes. One could happen when a website loaded a frame using a javascript: address, while another could occur when typing inside editable text fields.
Beyond that, Mozilla cleaned up several smaller issues. Search engines that users had already installed will no longer be incorrectly labeled as “New” when Firefox officially adds support for them. Pointer lock has also been improved, making it less likely for the mouse cursor to escape the browser window during games and other immersive web experiences.
Developers are getting a few fixes as well. Mozilla resolved problems affecting the Inspector’s Rules view and fixed View Page Source so it correctly handles blob: documents and pages that inherit their origin, such as srcdoc frames.
One issue remains unresolved, however. Mozilla warns that some Windows users may still experience startup crashes if a previous update left Firefox in an inconsistent state. If that happens, the recommended fix is to download the latest Firefox installer from Mozilla and install it over the existing installation. Your bookmarks, passwords, and other personal data will remain intact.
Mozilla has recently introduced Tab Groups on Android and rolled out the redesigned Firefox Nova interface to Nightly users. While those changes are still making their way through the release pipeline, Firefox 153.0.1 ensures the current stable experience is a little more polished.
