On X (formerly Twitter), people are seeing posts from blocked or muted accounts both in search results and in the timeline/replies.

Posts on Reddit describe how accounts that were blocked still show up in search results. People say it affects muted accounts as well. The problem doesn’t seem to be limited to search, since there are reports claiming that posts and replies also show up from blocked accounts in the timeline or home feed.

Reddit post about the X issue.

This is not the first time we’ve seen this issue. Reports from last year describe being able to view posts from blocked/muted accounts as well, and the issue periodically flares up from time to time. The latest flare likely began yesterday.

It’s worth noting that a native feature on X allows you to hide results from blocked and muted accounts. However, even with that toggle on, I still see blocked/muted accounts in my search results.

Remove blocked and muted posts.

People are questioning whether the feature no longer works. I could replicate the issue on the web app, iOS app, and Android app. I’ve also personally experienced seeing replies and posts from blocked accounts on my timeline.

Replicating the issue.

Previously, we covered an issue where posts from the @Products account were showing up on timelines even with the account blocked. A similar issue seems to be happening now, but for blocked accounts in general.

X has changed the behavior of the block function in 2024. The button only prevents the blocked person from engaging with the post, but not from viewing the post. You can still view posts if you click into the profile of an account that has blocked you, and this is expected behavior.

However, seeing posts in the timeline and seeing blocked accounts even in search results is a sporadic bug that X has not yet fixed. If you’re facing the issue, there are extensions like Twitter Filter on the web that you can use until X patches the bug (please note that mentioning the existence of such extensions should in no way be considered as an endorsement from our side).

In other X news, the legacy Twitter app may be on its last legs. You can read about that here. Want to make your timeline pink in color? Here is how you can do that.
