People who never updated from the old Twitter app to X are dealing with a frustrating problem. Replies have stopped working and they are getting error messages when they try to respond to posts.

The complaints started showing up on Reddit in the r/Twitter subreddit over the last day or so. One thread pointed to X rolling out an updated API that is causing the errors on replies.

In a separate thread, someone else said their old Android app just quit loading new posts and clearing the cache made no difference.

This is not just on one platform. Users on iPhone, Android, and iPad are all running into it.

The app still seems to let people browse their feeds and, in some cases, post new tweets. But replies are completely broken. The web version appears to be working without issues for most, which suggests the changes are hitting the app side specifically.

Users have also been speaking up about it on X. Searching for ‘can’t reply to tweets’ shows a stream of complaints from the past several hours on both iOS and Android.

That said, this isn’t the first time in recent days that we’ve seen legacy app users facing issues. Back in late April, there was a similar wave of problems for people on the old Twitter app. Their feeds showed “unable to retrieve tweets” errors, but it cleared up after about 24 hours and then broke again not long after. So this seems like a continuation of the ongoing changes that X is making to break the old Twitter app.

X has been moving away from older API versions for years. When they first started dropping support for the legacy APIs, third-party apps like Tweetbot and Twitterrific went down almost immediately. This feels like the same process, but slower, and now the official old Twitter app is the one affected.

In the Reddit threads, some users said they plan to wait it out and hope it resolves on its own. Others are less confident. One wrote that we might really be cooked. It seems X is tidying up anything that still resembles the old Twitter.

One thing to keep in mind if you are still on the old app. Updating could wipe your drafts. It is a good idea to screenshot them or save them somewhere before making the switch.
