Update 23/04/26 – 06:12 pm (IST): At least one user confirmed to us that the issue was resolved for them after they updated the app.

X notification issue

This is most likely the case since X just rolled out an update to fix the deep-link bug that has also been plaguing Android users for the past few days. So head to the Play Store and install the latest update for X.

Original article published on April 22, 2026, follows:

When trying to open the X app by clicking on a notification, some users are reporting that it throws the “Open with” pop-up. It’s supposed to directly open the X app, because the notification is from X.

Notifications opening link bug on X.

Weirdly, opening the notification asks some people to choose between opening with X or… X. This system dialogue typically appears only when multiple applications can handle the same file type or action, like opening a PDF or a web link.

User comments about the X notifications bug.

However, it’s not supposed to appear for an app. One plausible, though unconfirmed, explanation is that Android is confusing different versions of the app — such as the standard app and the ‘New X for Android’ build — and registering them as separate applications.

But this isn’t the only problem with notifications lately. A few days ago, we reported how the new X Lite app and the New X for Android experience display a blank notification with no information about the post too. That issue has also not yet been fixed yet.

Another bug is that tapping on notifications doesn’t directly take you to the relevant post. Instead, it just shows your home feed or timeline. Additionally, the bug also affects links. I’ve experienced this myself, where tapping on a link just takes me to the home feed, but doesn’t open the linked post. The issue is not present on the iOS app or the web app.

X notification glitch

While I couldn’t find a clear-cut workaround to either of these issues, generic ones like clearing the app cache and data may help, according to a reply from Grok. However, if this stems from a server-side bug, users will have to wait for an official patch from X.

It’s not surprising to see many bugs popping up lately, because the X team has been shipping several features at a fast pace over the past month. For example, you can now customize your entire timeline. We covered that here. I hope X can find a balance between refinement and features in the future.
