Samsung set to introduce Galaxy S20 'Ultra' in new naming scheme

Samsung’s 2020 mega release is almost upon us. Traditionally, the company prefers a Q1 release of its S-line flagship for years and if reports are true, 2020 will not be different.

In the lead up to the launch, we have seen many leaks about virtually everything about the upcoming devices. Ranging from the Bluetooth capabilities to the custom 108 MP camera sensors, and the obvious screen sizes – the craze is unputdownable.

One topic that was still up in the air is what the new flagships would be called. If Samsung sticks to its current naming scheme then we should be seeing the S11 line of phones. However, if every single leak and speculation is to be believed, we should be welcoming the Galaxy S20 line of phones.

Well well well, new reports coming in indicate that Samsung might deviate even further from their conventional naming scheme. To recall, we got 4 Samsung Galaxy S10 devices. There was the ‘cheapest’ Galaxy S10e, then there was the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10 Plus and the Galaxy S10 5G.

This time, all the new devices will be 5G enabled. This effectively eliminates the need for one of these devices. Further, Samsung is rumored to go the Apple way by eliminating the S20e successor and making it the base model S20. Case-maker Schnailcase introduced this crazy theory.

This means that the new lineup will consist of;

• Samsung Galaxy S20
• Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus
• Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

This new development has also been confirmed by the legendary Samsung leaker, Ice Universe, on Twitter.

With this, the Galaxy S20 Ultra will be seen as the successor to both the Galaxy S10 Plus and the S10 5G. Also, one would argue that the S20 Ultra will be set to directly go against Apple’s iPhone 11 Pro Max, currently Apple’s most expensive iPhone.

In the past, many companies have reworked their naming schemes to either leapfrog their competition or for various other reasons. Samsung itself skipped the Galaxy Note 6 in a bid to harmonize their Galaxy S family and the Galaxy Note lineup.

Microsoft also skipped ‘Xbox 2’, renaming it to Xbox 360 in a bid to not compete with the PlayStation 2. Apple skipped the iPhone 9 with the iPhone X and kept going from there. The list goes on and on.
