Honor 20, Honor 8X & Honor View 10 September security updates are live!

Huawei, like its closest rival in the smartphone business, Samsung, keeps a list of devices whose software receives monthly updates and those that receive quarterly software updates.

The list was recently updated with devices like the Honor View 20, Honor Play, Nova 3 and Nova 3i scheduled to receive quarterly security updates going forward, but there were some obvious signs of mistakes in the listing.

Going by the list at the time, also scheduled to receive quarterly software updates from Huawei was the Honor 10 and Honor 8X whereas the Honor View 10, the View 20’s predecessor, was set to receive monthly security patches. Today, this listing has once again been revised.

Going forward, the Honor 20, Honor 20 Pro, Honor View 20, Honor View 10, and Honor 10 will receive monthly security patches. While that sounds cool on paper, things aren’t pretty much the same on the ground.

In mid-October, users of the Honor 20 and Honor View 10 are now receiving the September security update in India. For devices that are supposed to receive monthly security patches, it makes little sense to be receiving last month’s security patch at such a time.

Where the September security update is arriving on the Honor 20 as Magic UI version 9.1.0.147 (C675E8R1P1) and weighs in at 133MB, those using the Honor View 10 should be receiving version 9.1.0.331 (C675E8R1P9) and weighs in at 256MB.

As you may have noticed, the changelogs for the two September security update OTAs are the same.

This update improves system security with Android security patches.

It’s great to see the Honor View 10 receiving a new security patch in India after a very long time. However, it’s not cool that the company recently promised to release the October security patch yet we only get last month’s patches.

On the brighter side, the Honor 20 and View 10 are among the many devices that Honor will be upgrading to Android 10 beginning this quarter.

If you own the Honor 8X, look forward to quarterly security updates. The last time the Honor 8X got a new security patch was back with July security patches. After skipping the August patch, the Honor 8X is now receiving September security update in India.

The OTA is arriving as version 9.1.0.237 (C675E8R1P1) and weighs 108MB carrying the same changelog as the Honor 20 and Honor View 10 updates. If anything, don’t expect any new additions in terms of features, but performance improvements and bug fixes should be included.

Like the Honor 20 and Honor View 10, the Honor 8X has also been confirmed to receive Android 10 update when the stable version begins rolling out later this year or probably in early 2020.
