OnePlus 6T & 7 might get Horizon Light feature from OnePlus 7 Pro in near future
Remember when Samsung tried to defend their decision to remove the notification LED from Galaxy S10 by highlighting the Edge Lighting feature? Well, it did not go very well. In fact, an indie developer came up with a handy little tool to fix most of the shortcomings of the official implementation by Samsung.
In the early days on OnePlus 7 series (I mean weeks before the official release), leakstars confirmed about the curved screen in the Pro variant. The official OnePlus Twitter channel went one step further, and dropped a subtle hint regarding a Edge Lighting-esque feature in OnePlus 7 Pro.
The Chinese OEM mentioned that they were planning to extend the feature as a true alternative of notification LED by exploiting the curved screen space.
Edge lighting for notification would be a handy feature and we are still considering to add more features that will utilize the curved display in future
OnePlus marketed the feature as ‘Horizon Light’ and it is part of OxygenOS 9.5 branch. However, only OnePlus 7 Pro users can get the taste of this cool functionality till date.
However, there is a sudden twist in the current scenario. OnePlus recently prepared the third Android Q Developer Preview of HydrogenOS, based on Android Q Beta 5. The DP build was later made available for global users as well in the form of OxygenOS.
Both OnePlus 6/6T and OnePlus 7/7 Pro are eligible for this Developer Preview builds. Enthusiast people, who installed the HydrogenOS/OxygenOS based DP3, noticed various new customization options – including components related to the Horizon Light.
Wait, there’s more! These settings can be accessed on OnePlus 6T/7 as well! Although OnePlus 6T and OnePlus 7 (which is basically a refreshed variant of the former) do not have a curved screen, the OEM is probably planning to backport the feature to those phones.
Although users can access the customization options, Horizon Light itself is reportedly not working for non-OnePlus 7 Pro owners at this moment.
4. Horizon light doesnt work for me….nothing happens after activating it
It would be possible that the settings are nothing but a leftover from the common codebase of OxygenOS, but we do think that OnePlus will introduce Horizon Light to OnePlus 6T as well as OnePlus 7 soon – probably with the stable Android Q OTA in coming months.
