Sony is struggling to stand out in this rather competitive smartphone industry. However, it is doing a fine job in pushing out regular security and feature updates to its devices.

We are approaching to the end of November and Samsung has already started delivering December security patch to some of their phones. While that benchmark is too high, Sony recently delivered November security updates for Xperia 10/10 Plus alongside Xperia L3.

To continue with that trend, Sony is pushing out a new security update to the entire Xperia XA2 family of phones, i.e Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra and XA2 Plus. These are Sony’s mid-range devices released back in 2018.

Unlike the XZ2 lineup, they are powered by Snapdragon 630 SoC. In terms of camera, all of them sport a single 23 MP sensor at the back. The ‘Ultra’ variant is rather unique as it houses two selfie cameras.

The new update carries software version number 50.2.A.3.22. The update is expected to be a simple update but the security patch level is still uncertain. It is not clear whether this update carries the November Security patch update or not.

Sony engineers might have included some fixes related to existing bugs, but we still need to spot such discussions. The erratic behavior with the proximity sensors could be still unresolved.

Hello,

I am receiving the new firmware 50.2.A.3.22. I would like to ask if it is just a security update or if it includes the fix for some of the known issues. In particular is the proximity sensor issue addressed by this update?

Any other fix (radio…)?

Thank you, Matteo

It is important to note that the update is expected to hit other regions soon. Also important to note is that, the update is being pushed via OTA in batches. But, you can always head to Settings > About phone > Software update for manual checking.

The last update for these phones came in August. Software version 50.2.A.0.400 also packed August patches on top of Android Pie. Sony did publish AOSP building guide for Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra, but the actual update scenario is not very clear at this moment.

Sony’s official Android 10 update roadmap doesn’t mention Xperia XA2 family anywhere.Let’s hope the Japanese OEM will their change their mindset in future.
