While releasing tons of new phones (including the new CC lineup), Xiaomi does provide regularly irregular software updates. Even if they have shut down the public beta testing of MIUI, the Chinese OEM continues to recruit volunteers to test (I’m little lost in the nomenclature here) pre-release builds.

Recent notice about tester recruitment

MIUI, the in-house skin made by Xiaomi, used to have only two regional channels: one is for China (no Google services, China specific bundled apps) and the other one is targeted towards global user base. The latter comes with multiple languages and integrated Google services.

Now that the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a thing (coupled with EU’s fair competition policy), the OEM started to maintain Europe specific firmware. To make things more convoluted, there are India and Russia specific regional builds of MIUI as well.

The Russian variant Pocophone F1 is still running Android 8.1 Oreo – what a fragmentation!

Talking about regional firmware builds, the global model (non-Europe/China) of Mi 9T (which is basically Redmi K20) is now receiving June security patches via staged rollout.

Apart from the updated security patches, the new build with the version number MIUI 10.3.7.0 also fixes a well-known volume related glitch.

The complete changelog is follows:

System

– Updated Android Security Patch to June 2019. Increased system security.

Lockscreen, status bar, Notification shade

– Fix: Media volume couldn’t be restored after receiving a notification

Mi Community moderators have notified users about the staged rollout policy, which explains the low volume of user reports regarding the new OTA. Nevertheless, the download link of the full update package can be found below:

  • Device: Mi 9T / Redmi K20
  • Codename: davinci
  • Channel: Global Stable
  • Version: V10.3.7.0.PFJMIXM
  • Android: 9.0
    • Type: Recovery
      • Download: Link
      • MD5: a0622a6370a067601b5b622028cb4e08

I like to thank developer yshalsager and the Xiaomi Firmware Updater project for tracking the OTA update URLs.

Meanwhile, a group of Mi 9T owners have confirmed that unlocking the bootloader does not downgrade the Widevine DRM status of L1 to L3. It means you can still watch Netflix in HD, even after having an unlocked bootloader.

FYI, OnePlus phones instantaneously downgrade the Widevine level to L3 after unlocking the bootloader. To the contrary, Xiaomi engineers opted for Google Pixel-eseque design which retains the level to L1 irrespective of the bootloader status.
