Windows 11 volume icon in taskbar corner appears muted even when sound is not? You aren't alone

Windows 11 is the latest version of Microsoft’s OS, and it recently started rolling out its stable version. However, it seems that there are still some things to polish.

Some Windows 11 users are reporting a problem related to the system’s UI. More specifically, the issue is in the volume icon of the taskbar corner.

According to reports, the volume icon of the taskbar corner is having an erratic behavior (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

Apparently, the volume icon in Windows 11 shows a ‘mute’ status spontaneously, even though the system sound is not muted.

Here, is bug description:
1. While using Windows 11, kept my laptop idle and went for dinner.
2. After an hour I saw that laptop went in sleep mode, so I turned it on.
3. Logged in to the Windows 11 with PIN and desktop is shown.
4. I noticed that at the right corner of taskbar, the Speaker icon is muted with icon x.
5. If I hover on the speaker icon, the text shown is Speakers / Headphones (Realtek Audio): Muted.
6. When I click on Speaker icon, the volume panel is showing normal (without any mute icon) speaker bar.
7. When I open youtube and play some music, I can hear the music without any problem.

Hence, the problem here is with the icon on taskbar which is shown with ‘x’.

Sometimes the volume icon in the icons tray on the right side of the taskbar says mute even when it is not. Upon pressing the unmute key once, the icon still remains the same. After pressing it for the second time, it starts working properly.

However, this would be just a glitch in the system interface. According to user reports, the sound on the Windows 11 device remains active without problems, even when the issue appears.

To return the volume icon to normal, the user would have to click on it at least twice. But, the bug may reappear later.

Although this problem does not affect the functionality of the device (since it does not really mute the volume of the system), it can be annoying for many users.

At the moment, it has not been confirmed if Microsoft is aware of this bug. Therefore, it is not known if the fix for it is on the way, or if it will take a long time to arrive.
