LG G8 ThinQ came out in April 2019 with Android 9 Pie out-of-the-box, while it now runs the Android 10-based LG UX 9.0.

However, users of the unlocked LG G8 ThinQ variant (LMG820QM7) in the US have been waiting for the VoLTE support on the AT&T network for quite some time.

The unlocked LG G8 ThinQ variant has been listed by AT&T as a compatible device for HD Voice. However, there was not sign of an update to enable the said support for the device in question.

Now, it seems that those with the unlocked LG G8 ThinQ units are getting the April 2021 security update. Also, the latest update enables AT&T VoLTE support on the unlocked G8 ThinQ variant.

The info comes from Reddit where multiple users of the unlocked LG G8 ThinQ variant have been reporting about the said update being live.

This further means that the device should now keep working on the AT&T network even after its transition to 4G-only calling in February 2022.

Users of the unlocked G8 ThinQ variant can now rejoice and check for the April security update if they have not yet received it.

However, the case is not same for some users of the Sprint unlocked LG G8 ThinQ (LMG820UM) units as they are still stuck on the Android 9 Pie-based April 2019 patch.

It seems that users of the Sprint unlocked variant of the device in question are not able to update their device to latest software version.

To recall, the carrier-locked Sprint LG G8 ThinQ units bagged the update to Android 10 way back in January 2020.

However, it is unclear why those with the unlocked Sprint units are unable to get the latest software update for their device.

In the meantime, those affected by this issue can try this workaround to see if it resolves the said issue.

That said, we will report back with more info as and when we get new details on the matter so stay tuned.
