The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is Sony’s latest video game console. It has been a hit since its release, although potential buyers have been facing a lot of low stock issues.

However, the PS5 has been receiving new games and features continuously. Sony usually sends updates to improve the gaming experience or add new features.

Yesterday, Sony started the PlayStation 5 V6.0 update rollout. Its predecessor, the PlayStation 4 (PS4) also received an update (V10.0), but this has been causing random error codes and missing DLCs.

The PS5 has not been without issues with its V6.0 update. For instance, many users have not been able to update their DualSense controllers.

That said, one of the main new features of the PS5 V6.0 update is the ‘1440p output’ option. But its compatibility is causing confusion among many players.

Throughout this story we will clarify everything you need to know about the PlayStation 5 1440p output and its compatibility, both with monitors and TVs.

PlayStation 5 (PS5) players confused about the new 1440p output

After the advent of the ‘1440p output’ option, many PlayStation 5 players have been unable to set it on their TVs or monitors. This is causing a lot of confusion since many assumed they’d easily be able to use the feature.

Why does 1440p not work on my 3440×1440 monitor?

I was looking forward to the latest update, because 1080p does look a bit blurry on my monitor and 4k looks stretched because it doesn’t fit the 3440×1440 native resolution of the screen. But now my PS5 tells me, 1440p was not supported by my screen. I can set my PC resolution to 2560×1440 and it works just fine.

(PS5) Sony X900F 1440p/120fps support.

As we probably all know, today Sony has rolled an update allowing PS5 to support 1440p. When I’m looking at my tv (Sony X900F) specsheet (on Rtings) it says that it support 1440p at 120fps at a forced resolution, hence why I never was able to play at this resolution.

But with today’s update, I was very excited and couldn’t wait to try it, only for it not to work. When I’m trying the new “test 1440p output” setting in the PS5, it says “The connected HDMI device doesn’t support 1440p output”.

Currently, many users have TVs or monitors with 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160) which exceeds the 1440p resolution (2,560 x 1,440). So, they thought that the 1440p output would be automatically compatible, but that is not the case.

Why the PS5 1440p output is not working for you

Something that many do not know about the PlayStation 5 (PS5) new 1440p output is that it requires the TV or monitor to be natively compatible with 1440p. In addition, the TV or monitor screen must offer a 16:9 display ratio.

Why it’s not working on monitors

In the case of monitors, many users of ultra-wide screens have found that they are not able to set the 1440p output on their consoles.

This is due to two main reasons. First, the monitor may not natively support 1440p, but the most important thing in those cases is the display aspect ratio.

PS5 1440p output does not support ultra-wide screen formats. So, the traditional 16:9 display ratio is a must.

If your monitor is not ultra-wide, then the problem must be a lack of native support for 1440p resolution.

However, there is a potential workaround you can try on your monitor to make it compatible with the PlayStation 5 1440p output:

Why it’s not working on TVs

The case of TVs is similar to that of monitors, but support is much more limited. Currently, most TVs on the market do not offer native support for 1440p output.

The resolution settings available on most current TVs are:

  • 720p
  • 1080i
  • 1080p
  • 4K
  • A Redditor highlights how limited current TVs’ native support is for 1440p output:

Basically, it seems that only some expensive OLED TVs are currently natively compatible with 1440p resolution. And, as we’ve mentioned multiple times, native support for 1440p output is an absolute requirement for the PS5.

In conclusion, the PlayStation 5 (PS5) new 1440p output is more aimed at a specific niche of premium TVs and monitors, at least until 1440p native support extends to more affordable products.
