Google has kicked off the beta testing phase for the upcoming June 2024 Pixel Feature Drop with the release of Android 14 QPR3 Beta 1. While the update currently offers limited new features, there’s particularly one silent improvement that Pixel 8 and 8 Pro owners struggling with wireless network connection issues will relish — modem updates.

The primary addition in this initial beta is the “Circle to Search” function, exclusive to Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24 users. This feature allows users to draw a circle around text or images on the screen to quickly initiate a Google search. Beyond this addition, the beta update doesn’t introduce significant changes or features.

However, the update also includes a noteworthy but less flashy improvement: a baseband firmware (modem) update for both Pixel 8 and 8 Pro models. This update, identified by technical codes (see screenshot below), enhances wireless network connections, including GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC. This translates to better performance for mobile data, voice calls, and other functions reliant on these connections. For clarity, the previous modem version was g5300i-231218-240116-B-11315489.

It’s important to remember that this is only the first beta, and further features are expected to be added in subsequent releases before the final June 2024 Pixel Feature Drop arrives. As with any beta software, potential bugs and stability issues may exist. Users interested in early access should weigh the benefits against the risks before enrolling their Pixel device in the program.
