On Android, flagship devices often get supported through two major Android version updates, although some OEMs are now pushing this to three new versions.

Once a device hits its two-year mark, the update frequency often slows down considerably as OEMs are then only obligated to push out occasional security patch updates to these devices.

OnePlus is among the few OEMs that are known to support their devices the longest. Case in point, the OnePlus 5 and 5T were both unveiled back in 2017. They have received regular updates over the years and Android 10-based OxygenOS 10 seems to be as far as they’ll get updated.

In an interesting twist, OnePlus is rolling out the November 2020 security patch to this device, albeit in China. This update brings quite a bit for a mere security patch update.

Below is the common changelog for this update. Please note that this has been directly translated from Chinese.

From the changelog, this update is set to bring improvements to the devices’ Weather app while it adds two more fonts to the system’s personalization settings.

But as mentioned, this is only applicable for users with OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T devices running the Chinese version of OnePlus’ custom Android skin, HydrogenOS.

That said, OnePlus’ new features and updates often start with its home market of China in HydrogenOS before being ported over to the global variants running OxygenOS.

With that, users of the global variants of OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T might want to start looking forward to the November security update as it should, at least in theory, bring some personalization options to their units.

We shall continue to keep an eye on this story and update as and when OnePlus finally rolls out this November update to the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T devices.

Also, it is pretty commendable that OnePlus still adds features and pushes optimization updates to the OnePlus 5 devices — devices whose end-of-life updates are presumably right around the corner.

Recently, we saw OxygenOS 10.0.1 update for OnePlus 5/5T rolling out with camera EIS, back gesture, fixes for call recording, alarm, and more bugs. More on that here.
