Motorola’s Moto G series has built a reputation for itself as the budget line of devices that offer some of the best value for money. Sure, this might not be true in every market, but for those in the west, Moto G devices are probably the best shot at owning a great budget smartphone.
The current darlings of the company are the Moto G7, Moto G7 Plus, Moto G7 Power, and Moto G7 Play. They recently got updated with new Android security patches, but for some reason, not the latest version available.
Not long ago, we also reported about the Moto G5s Plus June security update in India and August security update for the same device in the U.S, although the latter has yet to begin rolling out.
Now, today, we have related news for owners of the Moto G6 Play in the latter market. At the time of writing, Motorola U.S. has published the official release notes for August 2019 security update for the G6 Play.
Android security: includes the updates of Android security patches through August 1, 2019.
The fact that we have the release notes doesn’t imply that the rollout is ongoing. But it does confirm that the software update is around the corner, meaning the wait could only take a few days or so, although we can’t give any guarantees.
Motorola has this tendency of publishing software update release notes ahead of the official rollout and usually, the wait for the OTA rollout to begin may take anywhere between a few days and even a couple of weeks. We’ll update this post when the OTA update is live.
As noted earlier, the Moto G6 phones aren’t the company’s current favorite devices in the G family. The Moto G7 line up is, which is why they are also guaranteed updates to Android Q probably beginning later this year.
As for the Moto G6 family, Android Pie is the last major OS upgrade. Or maybe not.
Apparently, the Moto G6 could receive a second major Android OS upgrade after all. This is according to Motorola support, claiming that not just the standard G6, but also the Moto G6 Play will be upgraded to Android Q at some point. How true this is remains to be seen.
FYI, devices in the Moto G series only receive one major Android OS upgrade. Since the Moto G6 already switched to Pie from the pre-installed Oreo, we recommend that you take the Moto G6 Android Q update story with a pinch of salt.
You might remember the Moto G4 Plus case that forced Motorola to give the device two OS updates. The device had already received an update to Android Nougat and for some reason, Motorola mistakenly included it in the list of devices to receive Oreo.
Since the time of posting this, we have learned of some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for moto g4 Plus. It’s our general practice for the moto g family to get one major OS upgrade per device, so it wasn’t originally planned for Android O. But it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it has already received, we will be upgrading moto g4 Plus to Android O. Because this is an unplanned upgrade, it will take some time to fit into our schedule, we’ll update our software upgrade page when we have more info.

Upon realizing the mistake, the company removed the device from the list and this caused some serious uproar among Moto G4 Plus owners. Motorola was then forced to update the device list and include the G4 Plus, but promising to take their sweet time to release Oreo.
Indeed, the wait had to go until February 2019 before Oreo finally arrived in what was a true definition of better late than never.
