Google Chrome & other Chromium browsers not loading properly (broken graphics) on Ubuntu & Fedora, workarounds inside

Google Chrome, the world’s most popular browser, has revolutionized the way we access the internet. Its elegant interface and lightning-fast performance have earned it a reputation as a top choice for millions of users.

However, being popular doesn’t mean that the browser is free from various bugs and issues.

For instance, we recently covered the issues where Chrome’s ‘Send to device’ option was not working for phone numbers and the browser’s theme kept reverting back to ‘Chrome Colors’. Now, a new one has surfaced.

According to reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10), multiple users are facing an issue where Google Chrome and other Chromium browsers would not load properly on Ubuntu and Fedora.

Apparently, one cannot see any textual or pictorial content in the browser. And as per the claims, the same thing happens when one opens the developer tools window.

Some are even witnessing flickering issues and alleging that weird boxes appear on the app’s home screen. They also assert that the browser fails to load any website that they try to navigate towards.

One of those affected says that after the recent update, Chromium has stopped displaying most of the graphics. It also produces a lot of errors in the terminal.

Another user claims to be facing such problems on Fedora as well.

The issue popped up after a recent app update and remains unresolved until now. And understandably, those affected have taken to web forums to complain about the same.

After applying an automatic ubuntu update, Chrome went bonkers. Does not show most images, many icons are empty. Even input field borders not showing.

Some have even tried clearing the cache, rebooting their machine, switching to Incognito mode, and uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but to no avail. Users are now requesting the developers to fix this glitch.

Fortunately, we did come across some potential workarounds that might help you. Firstly, you can try deleting items in the GPUCache directory, disabling hardware acceleration, and updating your browser installation.

In addition to this, you can also try disabling the installed third-party extensions and updating the graphics drivers for your system to address graphics related issues.

If the above-mentioned workarounds don’t work for you, then you can reset the browser to its default settings and reboot your Linux-based machine to resolve problems with Chrome or other Chromium-based browsers.

As a last resort, you can switch to alternative web browsers like Mozilla Firefox.
