Google Chrome theme keeps reverting or changing back to 'Chrome Colors' for some users, but there's a potential fix

Google Chrome is one of the most popular browsers used by people across the globe.

It has many useful features, such as the ability to customize the look and feel with themes and background images, which helps add a personal touch.

However, things are far from rosy.

Google Chrome theme keeps reverting or changing back to Chrome Colors

Some people are experiencing an issue where a theme they apply keeps reverting or changing back to Chrome Colors (1,2,3,4,5,6).

For some, the browser’s theme color scheme changes as soon as the background image is changed in the New Tab Page. While others claim that the theme changes to random colors as soon as they restart their device.

To make matters worse, clearing the cache or restoring the default theme doesn’t help solve their problem. The issue has been persistent for the past few days and affects users across multiple platforms.

And understandably, they have taken to web forums to complain about the same.

One of those affected says that the dark theme they have applied changes back to Chrome Colors every day. They also claim that the theme changes at random intervals throughout the day.

After updating to Chrome 112.0.5615.137 on macOS 13.3.1, I started experiencing, at least once a day, that my theme color automatically changes to a different custom color.

I keep on changing the settings to a different theme but it keeps going back to Chrome Colors after rebooting PC.

Those affected have tried changing appearance settings, disabling and uninstalling all extensions, and tinkering with Chrome policies but to no avail. They are now requesting the developers to fix this glitch.

No official response

Unfortunately, Google has not officially responded to the matter. So, it looks like users might have to wait a little longer before the problem is resolved.

But luckily, we did come across a potential workaround that may help solve your problem. It is recommended that you disable the ‘customize chrome color extraction’ option in Chrome flags, as mentioned here.
