When Google introduced Gemini as a replacement for its trusty Google Assistant, users were eager to explore the new AI companion. However, they quickly noticed that some familiar features were missing. Notably absent were the abilities to set reminders and create calendar events — functions that had become second nature with the original Google Assistant. Luckily, Google has been diligently enhancing Gemini’s capabilities with recent additions like ability to set reminders and create calendar events. However, Gemini still has some ground to cover before it can fully replace Google Assistant on Pixel phones and other smart devices.
While progress is being made, there are still gaps that need addressing. One area where Gemini falls short is its interaction with the lock screen. Unlike the original Google Assistant, Gemini doesn’t execute certain functions when your Google Pixel screen is locked even if you’ve enabled the option to “Allow Assistant on lock screen.” Users have reported various limitations (1,2,3) such as the inability to control home lights from a hot tub using voice commands when the phone is locked and at a distance or even execute commands like stating the time, temperature, or directions without having to unlock the screen.
Google acknowledges this limitation on its support page. While Gemini can help with tasks like setting alarms, controlling media, and adjusting some phone functions on the lock screen, it cannot yet handle things like reading messages or answering basic questions. In these cases, users must unlock their phones to access the full functionality. Unfortunately, Google hasn’t said much if or when this functionality might be added.
This gap in functionality has left users feeling inconvenienced, especially in scenarios where hands-free operation is essential, such as when using smart devices or accessing information on the go. As for the future, Google remains tight-lipped. Will Gemini eventually bridge the gap and match Google Assistant’s lock screen prowess? Only time will tell. For now, users should be aware that if Gemini is not working on the lock screen, it’s not a glitch — it’s a limitation set by Google and the only option is to switch back to the tried and tested Google Assistant.
So, next time you’re in the hot tub or need a quick weather update, keep your phone unlocked if you’re relying on Gemini. And who knows? Maybe one day Gemini will surprise us all with its newfound lock screen talents.
