Asus unveiled the successor to the original ROG Phone – Asus ROG Phone II – in July this year and naturally, the 2018 model is now the second favorite in just about everything, beginning with software updates, major Android OS updates or minor security updates.

The ROG Phone 2 comes powered by the OS that was readily available at the time – Android 9 Pie. The company has already confirmed that the device – alongside the ZenFone 6 – will be upgraded to Android 10, but it hasn’t revealed the timeline.

Even as the talk about ROG Phone 2 Android 10 update begins to take shape, owners of the phone’s predecessor feel neglected by Asus. The device hasn’t been receiving regular software updates in recent times compared to, say, the ZenFone 6.

For instance, ROG Phone users had to wait until early this month to receive an update with July 2019 security patch. Even more telling is that Asus ROG Phone Android Pie update details only came to light in May 2019, months after the ZenFone 5Z Pie update rolled out.

Zenfone 5z Android Pie update arrived in Dec. 2018

At the time, Asus promised to roll out the ROG Phone Android Pie update in Q3 2019. As of this writing, it’s less than a week before the end of Q3 and yet no signs of Pie for the gaming device.

Hi all,
After our team’s confirmation, ROG Phone (ZS600KL) is expected to upgrade to Android Pie (9.0) in Q3. We will make an announcement once the release is available.

With the update having not arrived by now, concerned users have taken to the ZenTalk forums to ask Asus when they’ll be rolling out the ROG Phone Pie update. In fact, it all started with an inquiry into ROG Phone Android 10 update details but ended up on Pie.

Will ROG Phone 1 be getting Android Q?

Yes rog 1 will surely get android 10 but it will require some time.

Sure, if Asus is to follow the 2-year Android OS release window, the ROG Phone should get an update to Android 10. But why are we talking about Android 10 when the device hasn’t even received Android Pie?

But……Android P?

Well, in response to the above question on Pie, an Asus moderator dropped a shocker after he said that Asus ROG Phone Android Pie update is still on the cards, but the company can’t give out any timelines for when it will be released. This is literally days before the end of the promised window.

We don’t have any timelines to share at the moment, but ROG Phone 1 will be updated to Pie sometime in the future. Software updates are a priority for us, please don’t feel like you’ve been forgotten!

Wait! How did we come from a Q3 2019 release date to no timelines all the way to “sometime in the future?” Well, only Asus knows how we got here, but it’s obvious that the company’s attention is somewhere else and not on the OG ROG Phone. Are you surprised by this? Well, I’m not!

As noted at the beginning, Asus ROG Phone is no longer the favorite in the ROG series now that the ROG Phone 2 is here. Besides the promise of Android 10, Asus has also been busy detailing supported games and even rolling out updates to the ROG 2. Hopefully, the OG model won’t be forgotten this early!

We will keep an eye on the ROG Phone Android Pie development and bring you the latest updates once we get them.
