As the anticipation builds for the imminent release of Android 15 Developer Preview, users of Google Pixel devices are in for a reminder that comes with both exciting and bittersweet news. Android enthusiasts can prepare for the upcoming Developer Preview of Android 15, but at the same time, it’s time to bid farewell to OS support for the last Pixel model to ship with a non-Tensor chipset — the Pixel 5a with 5G.

Android 13 and Android 14 made their debut in the Developer Preview arena on February 10 and February 8, respectively. With this timeline in mind, Android users can likely expect the unveiling of Android 15 Developer Preview within the next week or so. However, the Pixel 5a will not be part of this new Android journey going forward.

This capable mid-range champion has faithfully served owners since its 2021 release. It has delivered the pure Android experience, timely updates, and a blend of performance and value that resonated with many. However, as with all tech journeys, it must eventually come to an end. This means the Pixel 5a will miss out on the new features, performance improvements, and security enhancements that Android 15 brings. While it’ll miss out on the big features the new OS brings, Google will still keep it secure with monthly security updates until August 2024.

But amidst the farewells for some Pixels, there’s excitement brewing for others. The Android 15 Developer Preview is expected to land in just a week or so, giving developers and tech enthusiasts a taste of what’s to come. While specific details remain under wraps, rumors suggest Android 15 will focus on improving user experience with mandatory support for Vulkan API, more privacy controls, and performance. Features like native support for app archiving, a revamped lock screen, and deeper Material You integration are all on the potential list.

For Pixel 6 and above owners, including the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold, Android 15 Developer Preview is your ticket to experience these upcoming changes firsthand. But it’s important to remember that developer previews are not for the faint of heart. They can be buggy and unstable, and installing them carries huge risks. So, when Android 15 DP1 drops, proceed with caution and only if you’re comfortable tinkering with your Pixel device.
