Google’s latest Android 14 QPR3 Beta 1 might not be overflowing with new features, but it does offer a glimpse into what’s to come in the June 2024 Pixel Feature Drop. While the update doesn’t introduce a plethora of new features, it does include enhancements such as modem updates and a useful addition regarding app identification during biometric prompts. Unfortunately, Pixel users with a work profile are also dealing with sudden system crashes when opening apps in work profile using a fingerprint.
Let’s start with the good news first. The latest beta update brings app identification during biometric prompts on your Pixel phone. Now, when your device requests a fingerprint or face unlock after going past the lock screen, users will see an icon of the app that is requesting their biometric information. This change, live in Android 14 QPR3 Beta 1 on Pixel devices, aims to provide users with greater transparency and control over which apps are accessing their biometric data.
And now for the bad news. Despite these improvements, some Pixel users have encountered system crashes in Android 14 QPR3 Beta 1 that affect apps requesting fingerprint authentication within a work profile. This isn’t limited to financial apps; even popular messaging apps like WhatsApp crash when attempting to lock chats or open locked chats using a fingerprint while signed into a work profile. Slack is also affected by this issue, among other apps that require fingerprint authentication.

While Google has yet to issue an official response to this bug, the matter has been escalated for further investigation through the Issue Tracker. Hopefully the next QPR3 beta update will address this issue, although Pixel users in the beta program are likely aware of the potential for encountering such bugs and other risks.
