Apple released the newest iteration of its mobile operating system – iOS 17 – earlier this week. It brought along a host of new features, like Contact Posters, Live Voicemail, Check In, StandBy, NameDrop, etc. Of course, along with these major features, the new iOS update brought in many improvements to apps like Messages, FaceTime, Maps, etc. You can check out the complete changelog here.

However, as with any such major update, there are certain issues that people are facing with the iOS 17 update as well. Some of these hiccups appear to be minor bugs, while others can be categorized as annoyances. Then there are certain third-party apps that got affected by iOS 17 – of course, Apple isn’t at fault in those cases, but users are affected nonetheless.

The focus of this article is these problems, so that as a user, you are at the very least aware of these issues. Please note that since this is a roundup article, I’ll try keep it crisp. However, I’ll link to detailed articles or reports on specific topics so that you can take a deeper dive, and also test the workarounds (if available). So, let’s begin.

Problems, issues, and potential bugs

For some users, the problems may start at the outset when they try installing the iOS 17 update on their phones. As many have already reported, the update after installation consumes upwards of 10GB of storage space for them. Though some say that it’s temporary, as a part of this consumed space gets freed over the next few days (as the update settles in). But for those who do not have this much space left in their phone, it’s a bummer.

Next up is a problem that users face right after updating to iOS 17. It’s about the network or cellular icon and Wi-Fi icon disappearing after the update. Going by the reports, it’s an intermittent behavior, but it’s hard to disagree that the problem is very annoying. Thankfully, there are a couple of workarounds that have worked for some affected users, so do try them out if you are also facing this issue.

Moving on, many users are reporting that the new auto-sorting or auto-categorization of grocery items in the Reminders app isn’t working as expected. If this is what you are facing as well, you might want to read our dedicated article wherein we have also compiled a list of workarounds that some of those affected say worked for them.

Up next is a change that has annoyed some users – the swipe to rewind and fast forward video gestures in the built-in video player have stopped working in the way they used to. It’s an intentional change by Apple that users will have to adapt eventually.

Then comes one of the most debated changes about iOS 17 that we have come across: the alteration of the default notification sound. Those who don’t like it say the new ‘Rebound’ sound is too soft, and hence easy to miss at full volume, especially in noisy environments.

Of course, it’s not a bug or something that you would expect Apple to fix. In fact, everyone may eventually learn to live with this change. But as it currently stands, the change has certainly made many users uneasy, as they are already foreseeing them missing important notifications.

Another audio related issue that’s pinching iOS 17 users hard is related to custom text tones. Many users are pointing out that after iOS 17 update, the ability to set custom-imported ringtones as text tones has disappeared for them. Then there are some for whom this problem manifests in different ways. Anyway, there are a couple of workarounds if you want to go down that route.

Moving on, many users are struggling to get the new Contact Poster feature properly working. From not being able to see the promised full screen poster when a call happens, to issues related to contact card sharing, users are reporting multiple issues. We have collected as many reports as possible in our dedicated story and also mentioned some of the workarounds that have worked for them.

Similar is the case with the new Check-in feature, as users are reporting a wide range of issues, like not being able to send the check-in, not being able to receive it, feature being accessible to only one party, etc. Of course, some workarounds have come up, which we have shared in our detailed coverage on the matter.

And if you were one of those who was eagerly waiting for the Journal app with the first release of iOS 17, please be aware that the feature won’t be coming until later this year.

Now, let’s come to the affected third-party apps:

We are witnessing growing reports from users of the Facebook & Messenger apps who say these apps are crashing for them unexpectedly after the iOS 17 update. Most reports are from Facebook Messenger users but many Facebook users are also reporting the same. Thankfully, some users confirm a workaround – which involves adjusting the font size – has helped.

A similar kind of problem is also being reported by Geometry Dash users. However, the good news is that a fix for this is coming in an upcoming Geometry Dash update.

So, with this, we wrap up our article. Please keep in mind that when a major update gets downloaded and installed on a phone, it may eat up the battery faster and may also make the device sluggish in general, so don’t get too concerned about these issues during the initial phase. However, if these problems persist days after the update, then you need to start investigating further.

Oh, and yes, acknowledging the fact that some of you may want to disable some features due to personal preferences, we’d recommend this informative article on CNET that deals with stuff like how to hide StandBy mode notifications, how to stop NameDrop for accidentally coming into action, and how to revert from “siri” to the “hey siri” hotword.

Also, don’t forget that iOS 17.0.1 and 17.0.2 are already out. If you want to learn more about them before installing these updates, head here.
