Mistral AI and Mozilla just announced a partnership that powers a private, multilingual AI for the Firefox browser.
The collaboration is focused on privacy, emphasizing that users get control and choice. The major feature improvement resulting from this partnership is the Smart Window feature on Firefox. While it’s in beta, this browsing assistant is now powered by Mistral AI.

What is Smart Window? It’s a feature that is described as helping you make sense of complex searches. It helps you “finish what you started.” Without needing to retrace your steps, reopen closed tabs, look through your browsing history, or rack your brain trying to remember the context, Smart Window helps you find your spot again. It also groups similar tabs together.

The CEO of Mozilla elaborated on the feature a few months ago, which we covered here.
For those unaware, Mistral AI is an AI company based in Paris. It creates LLMs and generative AI tools, and the models are open-weight. The announcement post mentions how two open-source advocates (Mozilla and Mistral) are working together to bring innovation to consumers.
The AI systems are fine-tuned on regional languages/dialects, and Mistral will help power the Smart Window feature in France, North America, the UK & Germany (the last two countries; it’ll follow suit later this year). Mistral Small 4 is the model that’ll power Smart Window. The feature is also optional, and users get to choose the model.
The blog also shares 4 reasons why the two companies think the partnership is important for the global AI ecosystem.
- Distribution of open-source technology. It demonstrates the potential of open-source tech to a mainstream audience.
- The AI is optimized for local countries and cultures. For example, France gets a French-language Smart Window in this wave.
- It gives people control over their interactions with AI. It’s advertised to be privacy-centric and also to have zero user data retention.
- “Sovereign AI” is being distributed to people.
Moreover, the CEOs of both Mozilla and Mistral have issued separate statements about the partnership.
Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, the CEO of the Mozilla Corporation, highlighted how AI is becoming an important part of how people experience the web. Mozilla doesn’t want people to be tied up with just one company.
The CEO of Mistral, Arthur Mensch, emphasized how the partnership represents privacy, choice, and control; also describes the two open-source advocates coming together.

The number of people that the Smart Window feature has reached has been steadily growing, with v155 expanding the feature to a lot more people.
In other Firefox news, the rollout for v156 has begun on Android; v157 has entered the beta channel on desktop. More on that here.
