Mozilla appears to be working on an OLED dark theme for Firefox on Android

It looks like Mozilla is working on a true OLED theme for Firefox on Android. Unlike the current dark theme, which has a dark gray background, the new theme, if released, will have a pitch-black background that looks great on phones with OLED displays.

It first got noticed when a Reddit user found traces of it in Firefox Nightly. Mozilla’s own bug tracker backs that up.

The bug is titled “[meta] OLED Theme.” It was opened about two weeks ago and lives in the Firefox for Android “Design System and Theming” area. Mozilla’s Gabriel Luong filed it and linked a private Figma file. So we don’t know how it looks just yet.

One thing to keep in mind. It’s tagged as a low-priority task, so don’t expect it in the stable app any time soon.

Mozilla has been fiddling with Android settings a lot this year, and not always smoothly. A recent update even broke a popular workaround for reaching advanced settings.

That said, I tried enabling the new hidden setting on my end, running Firefox Nightly 156.0.a1 (build #2016178487).

Once you turn on the hidden Secret Settings menu, there’s now a toggle that says “Show OLED Theme option.” You can flip it on, but don’t expect to see the OLED dark theme option show up in the customization settings.

That’s normal for something caught this early. Firefox for Android has had a steady run of updates this year, from the shake-to-summarize gesture to the arrival of Tab Groups.

An OLED theme is a small one by comparison. But people have been asking for it for years. We’ll update you once there’s an actual theme to switch to.
