Brave update v1.93.132 brings security fixes and Chromium 151 update

The latest update on Brave doesn’t bring new user-facing features; it’s a small maintenance/security update. However, some bugs have been addressed, and the experience should improve overall.

Brave posted the full changelog on the official Release Notes website. You can view a screenshot of the changes below.

I fired up the browser to check for the update, and as expected, it was already there. If you haven’t installed the update yet, you can go to About Brave, and it’ll automatically begin installing the latest version.

This is a summary of the changes:

1. Added validation for Tor bridge list: Brave has a special private mode that uses Tor, and sometimes bridges are needed for that. These bridges are written as a list of addresses. Previously, Brave didn’t verify the validity of a bridge. Now, Brave properly checks and validates the bridge list before using it, making the Tor features safer.
2. Fixed Widevine install prompt: Widevine is software that websites like Netflix, Prime, etc use so that you can watch paid/protected videos. Whenever you visit these sites for the first time, Brave shows a pop-up asking whether you want to install Widevine. However, a security researcher discovered that the prompt has issues, which Brave cleaned up.
3. Fixed NoScript MV3 extension incorrectly being migrated to its Brave-hosted MV2 equivalent: NoScript is a popular security extension that blacks JavaScript on websites. Browsers are moving away from an older extension system called MV2 to MV3, and the bug would wrongly replace it with Brave’s older version of MV2, causing duplicates.
4. Shield icons displayed in PWA windows: On macOS, when you made a PWA window go into full-screen mode, multiple shield icons would appear instead of just one. This has been patched.
5. Black bar being displayed on tabs bar when using compact mode in full screen: As you can see in the image below, turning on Compact Mode doesn’t create any visible black bars in full screen mode.
   
6. Chromium has been upgraded to v151.0.7922.76, bringing security fixes.

While the previous update added many features and had a massive changelog, this one is a bit more stability/security focused.
