The privacy-focused Helium browser is keeping its foot firmly on the gas pedal this month. Following a busy few weeks that saw the browser expand its MV2 extension support on Android and introduce a wave of new customization options and features, the development team is back with another major release. Helium version 0.13.4.1 has officially landed for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
While Windows and Linux users are picking up an array of core engine upgrades and UI refinements, macOS users are walking away with a standout platform-exclusive feature: Native Selection Translation.
macOS gets native, offline-capable translation
For Mac users, the headline feature of version 0.13.4.1 is the integration of Apple’s system-level translation service directly into the browser’s right-click context menu.
A brief demonstration shared by the Helium team showcases how seamlessly this works in practice. When browsing a foreign language website, highlighting a block of text and opening the context menu reveals a new “Translate…” option. Clicking it fires up a native macOS overlay sheet that immediately translates the text into your target language, complete with quick buttons to copy the translation or play text-to-speech audio.
Because this feature leverages Apple’s native architecture, it respects system-wide configuration. If you have already downloaded the language models within your macOS System Settings, this translation feature operates entirely offline, keeping your browsing data secure and private without pinging external translation servers.
Chromium 149 engine bump & new features
While macOS enjoys the translation spotlight, all three platforms benefit from a significant under-the-hood rebase. Helium has officially upgraded its foundation to Chromium 149.0.7827.155, bringing along essential security patches and performance improvements.

The engine update also introduces two notable feature tweaks to Helium’s core functionality:
- Chromium screenshot feature enabled: Users can now utilize Chromium’s native screenshot utility directly within the browser interface.
- PDF infobar disabled: To streamline document viewing, the intrusive PDF infobar has been disabled by default.
Helium v0.13.4.1 also brings a long list of user interface adjustments aimed at making the tab experience smoother, especially for those utilizing vertical tabs or tab groups.
Tab and layout enhancements
- Vertical tabs: Fixed the alignment and icon size for the New Tab button in vertical layouts. Additionally, the option to mute tabs while vertical tab strips are collapsed has been disabled to prevent accidental clicks.
- Tab Groups UI: Received a comprehensive layout overhaul. Vertical tab groups now prevent text and line overlaps, while horizontal layouts move the tab group underline to the bottom and make it thicker for better visual distinction. Solid group header colors have also been restored alongside a suite of vibrant new color options.
- Hover states: Fixed background hover colors for horizontal tabs and polished the press/hover colors for the new tab button. Tab group hover cards have also been officially enabled.
Context menu & internationalization (i18n)
- Cleaner menus: Context menus have been simplified to prevent awkwardly large widths on text-heavy pages.
- Onboarding & local translation tools: The onboarding flow has been deeply integrated into the i18n system with improved newline parsing and localized strings. For developers and advanced users, the update also adds a handy option to execute translations via local CLI tools.
