If you have multiple saved cards, picking through them individually does take some time. Chrome’s upcoming AI-based autofill feature could soon analyze your options and suggest the most suitable one.
It’s probably based on rewards, merchant categories, etc., and it doesn’t need any third-party extensions. The feature is a simple integration of AI.
This was first spotted by the folks at Windows Report. There’s new flag in Chromium called ‘autofill-enable-ai-card-recommendation-desktop.’ The recent commit explains this feature. It’s worth noting that Google hasn’t issued a public announcement at the time of writing.

For now, it hasn’t even been added to Chrome Canary. We’ve checked for any flags resembling “AI Autofill,” and the stable version obviously doesn’t have it as well.

Since it’s in early-stage Chromium experimentation, it could reach the stable build in a few more weeks or months. It depends on how fast the testing occurs, and Google iterates on such features for better accuracy before a wider rollout.
Since it’s absent even in Chrome Canary, where new features first land, it’ll take a while before public access. Canary is highly unstable and not recommended for daily use. After the feature moves out of the Canary channel, it’ll move to Chrome Dev, which is a bit more polished than Canary. Finally, it’ll hit the Beta channel, which is the most stable out of the pre-release ones.
If Google explains why a specific card was chosen by the AI, it would make recommendations a lot more transparent. It’s also unclear whether the processing of this information is on-device, since payment information is sensitive, and people wouldn’t want privacy hiccups (speaking of privacy, we recently covered a story where Chrome tried to throw out a privacy lawsuit).
All in all, this feature does save some money and time, so it’s one AI tool that people might consider using, since it doesn’t require third-party extensions.
In other Chrome news, you can’t move the tab search icon back to the right. We covered that here.
