Update – 20/03/26 – 04:40 pm (IST): Google is likely aware of the lock screen freezing bug, as noted by Android Authority. The company’s support account on Reddit has been spotted asking users for more details.
Original article published on March 6, 2026, follows:
The arrival of a monthly Pixel update, especially a Feature Drop, is usually a moment of excitement for the community. However, as is often the case with complex software rollouts, the March 2026 update appears to have introduced some friction for a small subset of users. Reports are starting to surface regarding various degrees of screen freezing, unresponsive UIs, and “system not responding” errors.
While the vast majority of Pixel owners seem to be enjoying a smooth experience, the growing number of anecdotes across different models suggests there might be a specific edge-case bug worth keeping an eye on.
From the Pixel 6 to the Pixel 10 Pro XL
What makes this particular batch of reports interesting is how widespread it is across the hardware generations, yet how isolated it remains in terms of total user volume.

The most severe reports seem to be coming from the latest flagship, the Pixel 10 Pro XL. One user on build CP1A.260305.018 noted that their device has become nearly unusable due to a persistent “Process system isn’t responding” error. This isn’t just a simple app crash; it’s a failure of the core Android system that leads to a total screen freeze, requiring a hard force-restart (Power + Volume Up) to recover.
The issues aren’t limited to the newest hardware, though, with reports ranging from Pixel 10 all the way to the oldest models still receiving software support, the Pixel 6.
Users are reporting a laggy lock screen where the phone takes several seconds to become responsive after a reboot or wake-up. Some users are seeing a combination of network issues and app freezes, with at least one report of a device failing to boot to the home screen entirely after a restart. Other reports mention slow response times and intermittent unresponsiveness, even after toggling settings like the display refresh rate.
The phantom lock screen freeze
One of the more peculiar symptoms being described involves the lock screen. Several users have noted that while the display appears completely frozen, the phone isn’t actually dead.
In these instances, tapping the screen still provides haptic feedback, and holding the power button still triggers Gemini in the background. However, the visual output remains stuck.

It is important to emphasize that, at this stage, the sample size is very small. We’ve been monitoring the update on our own suite of Pixel devices, and so far, we haven’t encountered any of these freezing behaviors.
For those who are seeing these issues, a few users have noted that a Google Play System update (separate from the main OTA) arrived shortly after the March patch, though the results on whether it fixes the freezing are currently mixed. As the update continues its phased rollout over the coming days, we’ll see if the frequency of these reports increases or if these are simply isolated incidents that a factory reset or a subsequent hotfix will resolve.
Are you seeing any performance dips? While most people are likely having a bug-free experience, we want to hear from you if your Pixel has started acting up. Is your screen freezing on the lock screen, or are you seeing the “Process system isn’t responding” error after the March 2026 update?
