Recently, there’s been a lot of buzz around poor moderation and child protection on Roblox. As a result, several states might force the platform to require age verification to create an account. The latest suit was filed by Nebraska on March 4, 2026. The state accused Roblox of creating a playground for child predators and misleading families about safety measures.
A Nebraska Attorney pointed to repeated child predatory incidents, and that minors are contacted through private messages or voice chat. This has largely been fixed, since public communication is now heavily restricted on Roblox, and the platform discourages child-adult communication.
The lawsuits aside, the platform does indeed struggle with moderation. We’ve recently covered the situation with re-enactments of tragic real-life events on Roblox, and you can read about it here. The platform indirectly ends up promoting violent themes to kids.
Several states, such as Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Los Angeles County, have filed similar lawsuits against Roblox. In general, they all demand better protection against adult-child contact.
Recently, Roblox introduced facial age estimation and government ID checks. Users must verify their age to access communication tools, and this was the result of new rules in the UK. This approach doesn’t fix the core issue with moderation on Roblox and just adds extra restrictions that don’t solve the problem. Mandatory verification on sign-up, if it happens, will block several legitimate young players who don’t get easy parental access.
It’s worth noting that this is just speculation coming from social media, such as this post from KreekCraft on X. Roblox has not officially made any announcements regarding changes to the sign-up process. Officials at Roblox are actively defending their record, stating that the platform has safety at its core and that they’re actively working with law enforcement.
Personally, I think Roblox should find ways of moderating content that’s posted on the platform better. It’s difficult to balance everything, since it might intrude on the subjective concept of freedom of expression. There are several people who do not want mandatory age verification on sign-up because that is a complete intrusion on the privacy of individuals, and people allege that it’s a way of handing over more data to the government.
