Roblox is now leaning on a new feature called ‘Trusted Connections’ to allow some cross-age communication, while still keeping its chat system more locked down. If you’re age-verified and above the age of 13, you can chat with your trusted connections directly, including both text and voice chat, and the conversations will remain filtered.
This comes as Roblox continues rolling out new safety features for chat. Earlier this month, the company introduced a mandatory age check for its chat system, requiring users to verify their age before they can use the chat feature.
Now, according to official information from Roblox, chat access is limited until the age of the user is confirmed, either via facial age estimation or ID verification. Previously, Roblox also tested a feature where messages were being hidden in the chat due to age restrictions.
The age check system aims to make interactions among users safer. It restricts communication between players with inappropriate age gaps, and this protects minors. This change also affects the global chat pool. In the global chat, only people of similar age groups will appear, and this limits adult-minor communication unless they’re ‘Trusted Connections.’
Access to chat is no longer automatic, and it also applies to experience chat, voice chat, and party chat. Before this change, all these functions were available with no age restrictions. Since completely preventing adults and minors from interacting is cumbersome, Roblox has introduced ‘Trusted Connections’ as a controlled way to keep certain lines of communication open.
Provided both users are age-checked, they can mutually add each other as trusted connections through a Live QR Code scan.
Recent changes to Roblox aren’t just related to security. The company is actively making aesthetic updates as well. They’ve recently removed system badges from profiles.
It’s worth noting that Roblox doesn’t permit experience chat for users between 5 and 9 without parental consent. Teens between 13 and 17 cannot create trusted connections with an adult, unless a real-life connection method such as Live QR is used.
