Update 28/01/26 – 04:01 pm (IST): In a statement to NPR, TikTok’s US operation spokesman said: “We don’t have rules against sharing the name ‘Epstein’ in direct messages and are investigating why some users are experiencing issues.”
Original article published on January 27, 2026, follows:
A fresh TikTok rumor has been circulating in the past few hours on multiple social media platforms, including X and Reddit, claiming that TikTok is blocking the word “Epstein” in direct messages.
The supposed restriction came under the spotlight when political commentator Brian Krassenstein posted a video claiming the new US owners were censoring the name.
BREAKING: After Trump’s allies took over TikTok this week, any mention of “Epstein” in DMs are not permitted.

Not long after, even Reddit users reported their messages disappearing seconds after posting them. The panic spread fast, with thousands accusing TikTok of covering something up.
As you can see, the post racked up thousands of upvotes, with commenters saying they got strikes for using clown emojis and that TikTok felt more free when China owned it. Many said they were deleting the app entirely.
But The Verge ran a quick test, and the whole “censorship” story collapsed.
Turns out TikTok isn’t singling out “Epstein” at all. The platform blocks tons of single-word DMs, including completely random words like “test.” Send “Epstein” in a full sentence, and it goes through just fine. The restriction appears to be part of a broader DM filter that has nothing to do with political censorship or current events.
Here’s the screenshot shared by the publication showing the exact same restriction applying to the word “test.”
That said, this isn’t the only misinformation that has been floating about regarding TikTok. Last week, we had to bust the misinformation that took over the internet, claiming that TikTok’s latest privacy policy update added the details stating that the app will now be collecting immigration status, sexual orientation, and other personal data. This wasn’t accurate since these terms were added almost two years ago.
Then this week, many users have been accusing the platform of censorship after seeing their views plummet or generic content in their FYPs. This rumor was also debunked today when TikTok finally issued a statement confirming that the glitches and issues are a direct result of a power outage in an undisclosed data center, not because the platform decided to censor everyone.
It’s not just average users who were roped in to believing that the platform is censoring these topics. California Governor Gavin Newsom reportedly stated that the state will investigate whether TikTok is violating its laws.
The Washington Post also covered separate censorship claims related to ICE raid footage. But again, all these claims are unfounded and, in fact, directly related to the ongoing outage, which has people seeing their views tanking.
Meanwhile, the “Epstein DM ban” clearly doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. If it were targeted censorship, you’d expect the word to be blocked everywhere and in every format. Instead, it’s just one of many words caught by what looks like an overzealous one-word message filter.
So no, TikTok isn’t banning “Epstein” in DMs. But the fact that so many people believed it shows how shaky trust in the platform has become since the ownership flip.
