Some TikTok users are reporting permanent account bans that reference behavior outside the app. The ban notice pops up with identical wording across cases: “Your account was banned because of serious misconduct outside the platform that goes against our Community Guidelines.”

A wave of complaints started appearing in early January 2026 across Reddit, X, Instagram, and Threads. One creator with 20,000 followers commented under a post on Reddit that their second account got banned for alleged human trafficking or sexual abuse, but their 70,000-follower main account stayed active.

Another user posted that they got hit with the off-platform ban despite posting only mindset and philosophy content since May 2024. The OP, however, later confirmed that they got the account back after emailing TikTok support nonstop. More recently, Creator Ethan Levins said on X that TikTok banned his account and seized $6,000 in gifts, coins, and purchases.

The ban language matches TikTok’s official policy. The platform’s community guidelines say it may “restrict or ban accounts belonging to people who have engaged in egregious off-platform behaviors, when we have sufficient evidence.” TikTok specifically targets violent actors, members of hateful organizations, or those who’ve committed sexual offenses against minors.

But banned users say they never got clarity on what triggered the action. The message directs them to email [email protected] with evidence, yet multiple people report sending daily appeals without hearing back.

This wave comes as TikTok deals with major backlash over the new ownership change and policy updates. Last week, people reacted to new terms of service tied to the US venture. Shortly after, users panicked over privacy policy language about immigration status and sexual orientation, though that wording was added back in 2024.

Then this week, broken For You pages and videos stuck at zero views led to censorship rumors. Forbes even covered Democrats and influencers raising concerns, but TikTok US later clarified that a power outage caused the glitches, not censorship.

Some Reddit users speculated that the new ownership and updated terms of service allow TikTok to track behavior across other apps installed on your device. That said, it’s hard to pinpoint the exact cause for this wave of bans.

Let’s hope TikTok comes out to clarify this sudden wave of account bans. I wouldn’t hold my breath over any official acknowledgment anytime soon since the platform is still dealing with other widespread glitches.
