Google app picks up partial Material 3 Expressive redesign

It seems Google is at it again, subtly revamping its apps with a fresh coat of paint. This time, the Google app on Android is getting a small but notable facelift, and it’s all thanks to a partial rollout of the Material 3 Expressive design language.

The tweak, which was first spotted and pointed out by popular tipster Leopeva64, is a low-key change that’s easy to miss if you’re not paying close attention. It’s not a complete overhaul of the app, but rather a small update to the Settings page.

Upon opening the settings, you’ll see that each section is now contained within a new UI that features softer, more rounded containers. It’s a clean look, to be sure, and one that aligns with Google’s ongoing effort to unify its design across the board.

This change comes after we’ve seen Google gradually push out Material 3 Expressive to a number of its other products. Just recently, we covered how Google keeps teasing the revamped Gboard app with Material 3 Expressive on the Google Pixel 10. 

And back in June, we also reported on how this new design language was rolling out for a few other Pixel apps. So while this latest update to the Google app’s settings is a small one, it’s a clear sign that Google is continuing its journey to bring this more dynamic and lively design to all of its apps.

Truthfully, it’s not a change to get overly excited about, as it’s limited to a single page within the app. But it’s a promising indicator of what’s to come. Here’s hoping that Google adds a bigger splash of Material 3 Expressive to the Google app soon, giving the rest of us more to look forward to than just a redesigned Settings page.
